Commission on selling a horse?

I know the norm is like 10-15%.
But what if the person selling the horse is...
--a family member or a close friend;
--has been the one showing/advertising the horse;
--has been at their house on a feed-lease basis;
....then what would you say percentage-wise?

Maybe pick an amount you want to get for the horse, then anything they sell it for over, is theirs.

I have sold a horse this way. It worked out pretty well for both of us. It works if you don't want much but if you are wanting a fairly high price then it is a bit unfair to the other partner.

Did you set a price before you leased the horse to them? The reason I ask is that I have done this several times. The way I do it is I get the what ever we agree that the horse is worth at the time we start. than split what they can get out of the horse after promoting it. I have done this with three different trainers several times. Everybody seems happy.

We've got a price we'd like to get, and a minimum that we'll sell for. Maybe I'll do the thing where if they sell over the minimum than it's theirs after that.....hmm.

Whatever you decide, keep communication channels wide open and ensure both sides fully understand what is expected from them and what they will get from a sale. Nothing will send a friendship down the drain faster than a hurt felings from a bad deal or misunderstanding where money is concerned.

I got a 30% commission on the pony I sold for friends last month. The pony was at their house but I did have to drive out
(25 miles each way
) and ride him a few times plus haul him to the local arena for potential buyers to try, so I really just recouped my gas and a little bit for my trouble. He wasn't a high priced pony and I think the buyers got a great deal.
I've got a small quarter horse at my house right now that the same friends own and need to sell because they don't have time to ride and I'm expecting a similar commission when I get him sold. Right now I need to ride him more than once every 3 weeks and get a better idea of what he is before I advertise him, but I need it to stop raining or I'll have to swim him instead LOL.
