I think I may be seeing my first summer sore on my horse. Last week he had a weeping, watery eye, that went to super swelled, itching and very red, and lots of yellow crud, in like one day. I treated him with eye salve with the steroid in it. Seemed to help immediately, kept the fly mask on 24/7 for couple days, now today it's starting right back up again. Treated again tonight with cream, fly mask back on also. I also notice he today had some sores on his upper lip. Has anyone had the eyes involved with summer sores? I really think that is what I'm dealing with. I will worm tomorrow and probably have to duct tape his fly mask on. Thanks.

I would have a vet look at him, just in case the eye is from trauma instead of illness.

Yes we had one come into the clinic in TX that had to have a Habronema larvae dug out of it's lower eyelid. Definitely needed to be sedated to get it out!

ETA: Deworm with ivermectin

If you suspect a summer sore, deworm with ivomec 3 days in a row.  This is what my vet told me to do.
Being that it involves the eye, I would also have the vet check it.  It does not take long for eye stuff to get ugly and end up losing the eye.

Yes, I had a mare with Habronema sores on the inside corner of her eye.  We sedated her & cleaned it up - didn't require any digging or anything but did cause some irritation to her eyelid so the vet gave me a steriod ointment to put in for a week or so.  Kept a fly mask on her during the day & did the ivermectrin.  Nevery had any more issues with her after that.

I rode with my vet last week and we dealt with a summer sore. He had to go in and scrape all the sulfur granules out of the wound. You could not see them in the sore, but as he scraped over and wiped on gauze, they were EVERYWHERE! He put a mix of dex, dewormer, and a topical cream on it, and then had the lady deworm the horse and said to come back and deworm with ivermectin again. It was disgusting.

He also said to deworm the entire barn because some horse in the barn is passing the larvae in their feces… so deworm everyone when you start… otherwise the horse can get it again.
