Location: Kansas (but Great Lakes member since 1978) | Bless you all for your prayers. My husband, Bill, is having a rough go of it right now but we are placing our faith in God and some mighty awesome doctors. A little background. His melanoma issues started over 18 years ago with a surgery on his abdomen.... never in a million years did that ever see the light of day. About eight years after that it was in his lymph nodes under his right arm and thyroid.... again surgery and then experimental radiation was done and the guy that had about two years to live went another ten before the melanoma came back on the original surgery site. Another surgery last fall and in March he was given a great "looks great looks clear". This prompted me to think a little more about the Now and not so much about the Future so to speak. I had been working on him for about three years trying to get him to agree with me that a new living quarters trailer would make our last few rodeo years more fun.... He is a PRCA judge and sometimes roper (he and I are old) and I still try to chase cans on occasion. Anyway, he finally gave in and so I talked our banker into the idea that we would remortgage our farm and get the new trailer. I swear it wasn't a week or two after I made the call to design my trailer that Bill started to have some pain on his surgery site. We kind of blew it off because he was roping on a mare that we have been messing with off and on for a few years and was roping off her and after a couple steers she suddenly totally blew up and managed to send him flying and kicked him on the way down. For a week we just thought he had smashed his abdomen with his belt buckle and went on about our normal lives. The pain didn't get better it got worse so he decided to go to the doctor. We finally got our original oncologist to do a pet scan.... it turned out to show that his melanoma had spread to his brain and several other sites on his body. I started to panic so we pressured for more ideas and opinions. We got hooked up with the head melanoma doctor at Kansas University Medical Center (they are the hospital that is paramount in figuring out the genome stuff for melanoma. He ordered some other tissue work ups and we were guided to some pretty interesting treatments. Bill finally was started on some pills that are processed for his exact melanoma made from his own tissue. The cost you might ask.... $20,000 a month for we don't know how many months. I choked but decided I'd sell our trailer before we even got to use it. The patient advocate group at K U went to work and while we'll still have to come up with a lot we have made connections with a group that approved us for what I feel is a generous help with our co-pays. Anyway, God is in charge of all this as I gave that over to him some time ago when my stubborn old body wasn't able to physically handle some of what I was trying to do any more. My husband is a man with very strong faith and still knows he's going to get through this again with all the prayers supporting him. I again want to thank you all for your prayers and please know that they are working. We just have to just keep thinking positive and let the gifted doctors we are hooked up with do their thing. |
