Location: South Central Florida | I have a little mare that is going to have surgery in the morning. She is 11 years young and a few years ago, well several years ago, I sent her to a barrel horse trainer, she came home doing well but bucking like a crazy horse (never EVER bucked before). She came home with a beautiful pattern but bucking. I actually posted on here about what might be wrong and it turned into a mess, but at this point I just want her right. The trainer never acknowledged anything happened to her while there but she had a large ... as big as my fist lump on her breast bone (between her front legs but under and back a little). It was hard but it got bigger and bigger. Vet sonigramed or ultrasound....what ever they do..... Anyway it was a bone chip. We rested and waited and it looked like it cascified and we rode her for a couple of years she was running 2D and doing well then it suddenly broke open and drained puss. I of course did my research and thought "pigeon fever" but that is very very very rare in our area, back to the vet and the chip had floated needed to be removed. We did not have the money to get the chip removed so I cleaned the open drain hole and antibiotics blah blah blah 18 months later (my husband has had 6 surgeries on his knees and so many other things going on) we go in to get the surgery. However now they are not sure what would do that and in all that time why it has not work it's way out. They scoped it this afternoon, and actually were able to pull several bone chips out that way but know they are not getting it all by the ultrasound thingey. So tomorrow they are going to lie her down, cut into the area and debread it remove any chips, or calcification they can find and "hope" they can get it all. There are a few worst case things but I am believing for a full recovery and they will get everything removed...the sternum is all healthy the bone is all healthy (except for the chip piece) and they will sew her back up and we will heal and be back ready to run shortly.
Sorry this was so long, but her name is Maybe, Easy Money Chick and she is a super sweet little mare. So I would appreciate any prayers for successful surgery, doctors hands being careful and led by God and a simple quick procedure with a call to come get my little girl.
Thank you!!! |

Location: South Central Florida | Thank you everyone. She is out of surgery and got right up. The question is still if they got it all. It looks like the chip shattered? I was having trouble understanding everything he was saying but they have a drain in it and are hoping IF there are any more pieces they will be able to exit the body as I understand. I go pick her up tomorrow :) Thank you. |
