Silly me, I think it's wonderful when they have a barn/ shelter to go into.  I got hit on the noggin by a hailstone one time.  It HURT.

Mine have the option of going into their run in shelter when it rains.... they are always out in the weather when it storms.

I guess I was just thinking for the babies sake...I would feel differently if they had a shelter but they don't. It's been 90 here during the day and storms everyday.

I'm sorry but I have to say this...........my horses have access to shelter 24/7....when it is pouring down rain, even hailing....then are standing outside with their butts to the fence. Doesn't bother me one bit, if they feel the need to get into the barn, they will......otherwise, when it rains I'll sit on the porch with my beer and silently laugh at why they won't go into the barn LOL

Just Bring It - 2014-06-24 10:20 PM My horses even when they have the option to go inside choose to stay out in the rain. I think mine enjoy it because the bugs leave them alone finally...lol.
An old farmer told me his theory... He said "Horses can tell how long it will rain for and what's comin'. If it's a little rain, they'll run for shelter because they don't want to be wet for nothin'. If it's alot, they're not gonna bother because they'll have to go out in it to eat sooner or later." lol, made sense to me... Wish I had a sixth sense to know how long the rain would last.

This makes the most sense to me!

My rope horse has a nice barn big stall 12 x 24, when it was pouring down rain last night he was right out in it!! He can come and go as he pleases and I guess it pleases him to be soaking wet.

Not my circus, not my monkeys.

Just say that to yourself over and over the next time somebody elses business bothers you :)
That was not meant to be mean. I make myself say it whenever I find something bothersome or distrubing that is not my business nor do I have any control over.

On the shelter/no shelter note, my mare hardly leaves her run in shed. In the heat or cold or rain, she wants to be inside. She's kinda prissy, lol

When mine was out on a huge (20 acre) pasture, they were in the shed frequently, but mostly during the heat of the day. They also had trees, but they preferred the shed.

If they don't have shelter, I don't think it is the end of the world (depending on climate). I would be more concerned about extreme heat or cold than I would about storms/rain/hail.

As long as the horses had trees or run in sheds I never gave much thought to it until I started dating my SO 8 years ago and he had just lost 3 of his best horses to lightning. :( since that horrible day he has not left the horses out in a storm. They are always out unless it's storming.

My horses must be just plan odd then.  When mine have access to the barn they normally are inside when it rains.  If I have them in a pasture without shelter, they are at the gate wanting in.

At my old place they didn't have shelter so they only went out at the coolest times of the day and if it was bad weather they didn't stay out and they didn't want to either.

They are also pretty much on a dry lot...barely any grass..

When mine are up in their pens with runs they will stay under their sheds while its raining, but once I turn them out for the day and if starts to rain/storm and they do have a place to get out of it if they want to but they rather stand in the rain, I dont know why but the do. I think its pretty silly myself, lol.. Goofy boys

Sorry for his loss.

There have also been horses who have been in shelters not properly grounded that have been killed by lightning as well.

Mine have access to a barn and prefer to stand out in it. Last night and today are no exceptions. The have a barn and plenty of trees so its their choice.

our storms and rain were HORRIBLE I too was on the freeway, and there were cars pulled over for miles, you could not see a foot in front of you! I thought for sure we were in the middle of a tornado.
