We had one get bit last year. He is a nasty POS bucker, so I was kinda hoping nature would take him off my feed bill. No such luck...He swelled up but not terribly so. One went in deep and the other grazed his nose. He still has the scar from the deep hole.

While riding last week, it began to rain. We haven't had rain in such a long time, that I decided to keep riding.  My mare got ansy and I assumed it was because we were heading towards the barn. I decided to do circles and she suddenly jumped sideways.  Yep...pretty nice sized rattler was soaking up the rain as well, and I darn near put her on top of it. (or should I say when she jumped sideways, she darn near put me on top of it. lol...)

I have never had a horse bitten by a rattler but had a dog that was bitten twice and pulled through just fine without anti venom. My dairy goat was just bitten this 4th of July in the morning, I about had a heart attack. We found the snake and killed it. She is recovering well. I think she was bitten on the lower jaw, her nose swelled a lot but not enough to need to put hoses in her nostrils . Most of the swelling was under the jaw, lips, and neck. She couldn't eat or drink for the first 2 days. I gave her Benadryl every 8 hours, as well as electrolytes and water through a syringe every 2 and cold compresses. By day 3 I was giving her milk and oatmeal "smoothies". Sunday evening she started eating and drinking on her own but needed her feed and water elevated as it hurt to bad to put her head down. Yesterday she was doing even better. We started her on antibiotics to make sure she doesn't get an infection. Still can't tell where she was bitten exactly. Sounds like your vet is doing the right things. Animals are more tolerant to the venom than we are. My bet is your horse should recover just fine. I do have a friend who's horse was bitten on the leg and the swelling never went away. He is working sound but always looks stocked up on that leg for some reason.

We had a yearling filly get bit right above the eye.. she never had trouble breathing but her face swelled so much when the swelling went down her skin just fell off.. I think because she was so small and young it messed with her mind too.

Well we got our mare home. She is doing much better, last of antibiotics tonight. The swelling has gone right down and vet said should be able to ride in a week.

Honeymoney - 2014-07-07 4:53 PM I had a cat bitten on the side of the head and took it to the vet. She did not give anti venom and the cat was fine in a few hours. Vet said without treatment that animals abcess all over from the venom. The dog has been bitten a couple of times by a water moccasin and he was fine without anti venom. Animals are pretty resilient from snakebites. Just do what the vet tells you and I am sure the horse will be fine. Not too pleasant to deal with though.

In a few hours?  My husband woke me up one morning and said "Something's wrong with one of the cats."  I look over and her face was swelled huge - she didn't seem to distressed, though.

I told him she might've got snake bit - he looked at her head and says he did see 2 marks on her skin.

I remember reading somewhere about cats pulling through w/ no treatment -- we put medicine on her head of some sort , watched her for a bit. We had to leave the house for some reason, can't remember, and when we came back a few hours later, she was fine.  I thought it must not have been a snake bite, then???
