I am preparing to have my geldings hocks fused with the laser procedure at Oakridge in the coming weeks. I am interested to hear any experiences (return to use, rehab time, cost, effectiveness) that y'all have had. I know Cheryl M has had good experiences, just want to hear some more stories! Thanks!

No experience personally but wanted to say I sure hope you'll keep us posted with everything that happens. Best of luck.

What did the hospital tell you? I am curious about this procedure.

This horse has been retired for over a year due to his hocks not fusing. Dr Hague is going to review my xrays and we will figure out how to proceed from there. I will keep everyone interested posted on it!

This is very interesting! I understand that not many horses hocks do fuse. We have them injected or used to Bute often.

I have visited with the original poster through PM's. We had this procedure done on one of our horses in April. It has been great, he hasn't been sore since the day we picked him back up. The rehab program on them is fairly extensive. They start with hand walking twice a day, then you go to ponying them twice a day, starting at 10 mins, building to twenty mins., at a trot. Ending with riding and long trotting twice a day for 20 mins. And we followed the rehab faithfully. My only regret is that we didn't have it done five years ago

Discuss with the potential surgeon about his success rates, and infection rates.

Look into your horses history see if they have had hocks injected with depo, as some surgeons including mine will not perform the surgery on a horse who has had depo as the success rate is much lower then a horse who has never had depo.

Depo when broken down in the body leaves behind an inactive metabolite that prevents healing

We had laser hock fusion done at Oakridge. We had had our horse injected but they didn't last very long so surgery was suggested. After rehabbing my husband started roping on him again and felt like he was off in the front. He took him back to Oakridge and had an extensive lameness exam done. He was showing pain in the front at his knee, but also stifles and one of his hocks. They re-x- rayed the hock and saw there was a small spot not fused. He tried to inject but weren't really able to because the space was so small. Took care of his other issues and we haven't had any problems since.
