Freeze Brand Nerve/Tissue/ Muscle Damage
Veteran

I recently purchase a horse in February. They used him as a stud until he was 9 then gelded him
(he is now 11
). When I tried him out the lady said she wanted him branded before he left their place, odd request I thought since he was born and raised there why had he never been branded before. Also he is no longer a stud so can't really promote their facility. They chose to freeze brand him the day I had him vet checked
(I was not present as it was in a different province
). After I made the decision to purchase him, once I got him home I noticed him always sweating around his brand so I had figured there was some nerve damage there but didn't think it was a huge issue. I recently got him massaged/ chiro'd and she said she felt some muscle/tissue damage in that area as well and wanted to relate it to the brand. She said she has seen a few horses similar to this and they have eventually come back to normal. I have never heard of branding doing such damage to the actual tissue/muscle. Has anyone had experience with this? Is it easy to get back? Anything I can do to help? I haven't been able to make even a decent run on him since I've got him and yet made a good run on him when I tried him, could this maybe be the issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated! :

I brand all of mine at generally around the age of 4-7 depending on when they need to go to the vet.
I have never had one sweat around the brand and never had a brand affect how a horse runs.
The only way I could see muscle damage is is the vet left it on for too long.

A freeze brand is an injury to the body. Nothing major but none the less it is an injury that the body wants to heal. Look up equine injury recall info online. Or if you vet/chiro knows kinesiology techniques they could show you some things to do to help the body get back to the way it was before the injury took place. The rearend injury recall techinigue involes rubbing the area
(the brand
) with your fingers then lightly pushing down on the top of the hocks with the palm of your hand then repeat a few times.
