I have the 57mg tablet for my older mare who has arthritis. My vet prescribed it for her to use when we run. But I'm not sure how soon I should give it before a run?

I would do it at least a few days. Previcox can take a little longer to kick in than bute or banamine.

I give Previcox daily.  As per my vet instructions I started out with half tablet and then after that 1/4 tablet.  It takes a couple days before you notice a difference.  Please get advice from your vet and do what they tell you to do instead of listening to us though.

yep, you usually have to pre-load it before an event.

Are you giving a 1/4 tab of the 57 MG or the bigger one..I think it's 227 MG?

Thanks everyone! I'm planning on calling him tomorrow to ask, he's out on calls today, but I know many on here use it so I thought I would ask. He had actually told me to give one (57mg)  tablet to her. He gave it to me back in January, and we haven't run yet this season, so for the life of me I cant remember exactly what he had said as far as loading dose/etc.

I'll have to look at my tablet size that I just got from my vet. It is a cumulative drug, so you have to build it up in their system to see an effect.

You give 3/4 tablet the first day, and then 1/4 tablet to maintain. If you ever miss a day, give the 3/4 tablet again. That is what gets it up to the "treatment" level.

That is what my vet told me and that's the same thing it says on the box.

I'd have to look at the bottle.  Its the larger size pill.

I personally give it daily. My mare has been on it for years and as long as I'm ridin her daily and running her on the weekends the vet wants it given daily to be effective.

I have an 18-yr old Jet of Honor gelding who was clocking and winning money with tough 1D times on a consistent basis until about mid June of this year.   I took him to the vet and he did a complete floriscope of all four legs (top to bottom) and told me he looks great with the exception of some arthritis.   He gave me the option of injections or Previcox and I chose Previcox since this horse has never been injected.   He said give him a full Previcox (57mg) tablet once a day for a week then give him a try.   I can tell you without any hesitation the Previcox WORKS!   This horse is running as good as he's every ran and is back to being snappy in his turns.   He has won 1D money the last two weekends in some VERY tough company.

I have spoken to multiple people and Vet's who know about Previcox (from personal experiences) and I have come away with this conclusion.   I'll use it during the periods when I'm in the heat of competition but will give it a break in August when the competition winds down and we won't be going to barrel races as much.   I need him at the top of his game in Sept. and Oct. and will give him Previcox 4 to 5-days prior to competing in Sept. and will feed it through Oct.   After that, I will give hime time off and will quit feeding.  The reality is......it only masks the symptoms and does not heal anything.   Therefore,  I will not take any chances of side-affects any more than necessary.

I give the 57 mg to Brother Dave daily, and have since March.
He has a fused right hock, and this seems to be helping him .

My vet said it was a good idea for my older horse on show days, especially when he needs to be stalled. I give 1/4 of the large tablet.

Keep in mind, if they are drug testing per AQHA rules at your event, you need to make sure you do not overdose your horse with the pill. The 1/4 pill is around 57 mg, while the paste is 45.5 mg/1000 lb horse. You also need to give it 12 hrs out per those rules, which IBRA adopted too. I talked to the guy on the medication hotline, and they said normally the horses that were over for fibrocoxxib were linked to accidental od with the pills (it won't hurt the horse, but it is over the allowed blood level).

Well just thought I would update! Spoke to my vet and he told me that if my plan was to run on Saturday, that I would begin giving one (57mg) tablet on Thursday morning. I would then give her 1 tablet again on Friday morning, another on Saturday morning, and then again on Sunday morning. :)
