Hello everyone. Question for you all. My husband wants to go riding with me and that is all good and well but he is 6'9 and about 350lbs or so and I just dont know if he is too big for my horses. They are about 15.1 and about 1000lbs. Is he too big to ride them?? Thanks in advance.

I have run some dude strings and our rule of thumb was 20% of the horses weight plus the tack was safe. It depends also, on if the person is athletic or not. A 175 lb fat woman with no sense of balance would do much more harm to a horse than an athletic 250 lb man who knew how to balance. I hated telling people that were too heavy to ride, but had to. I'm going to say that he needs a draft horse to be safe for the horse and for him.

Yes I was thinking of a draft cross.

My husband is also a large man. About the same weight and 6'4". He rides larger horses, 15.3 to 16 hh and at least 1200 lbs. He won't even step on them until they are four and mostly grown. He doesn't ride my smaller horses.

Yes in my opinion he would be to big for your horses, that would be to much for a 15.1 hand horse that only weigh about 1000.00, with his weight and then add the saddles weight.
