I'll try and get a pic when I go out to feed in a little bit. This happens at least once every summer, and ONLY to this horse - we have 4 other horses.

It's not like a welt or a hive. It's a swollen bump with a scab in the middle and he doesn't like when you touch it. The first time he got one on his lower leg and his whole leg swelled up and got really, really hot. Last summer he got one right where his front cinch went. This time he's got two of them on his upper right front leg (I rode him Monday and he felt like he was moving weird; not limping but he felt stiff. This would probably explain it because I just found them today and they don't look fresh, they look a few days old).

No one else gets bit like this, or at least, they don't have a reaction like this. I live in western Washington. My first thought is a deer/horse fly, but then no one else has reactions like this so I'm not really sure?

Hopefully you can see what I'm talking about, kind of hard since he's a roan and the same color as the scabs. They almost look like scars, the color of the skin, but I promise these are new. In the case of the other bites the swelling showed up first and then the scabs later. He must have had some swelling on Monday and I just didn't notice.

My gelding got something similar on his shoulder.... very swollen and his was kinda sore to the touch but also seemed really itchy. Swelling went down after a few days and it got really itchy but hes still got the recovering scab... im curious to know also.

My horse is a lumpy mess right now, I cant seem to win with these stupid bugs and the other 20head of horses seem fine. Hes just ultrasensitive.

It could be to ticks. We have 6 horses and only one has this happen to him every summer. We have actually found some ticks on him and removed them. He always gets a bump from the bite most of the time followed by ozing and a scab.

My mare has this same reaction when she get a tick. It swells and then a small (kinda thick though) scab forms in the middle of the bite. It always seems pretty itchy and she loves when you scratch it but you have to be careful not to scratch it too hard because its also kind of tender.

I had a vet look at her twice for it. She told me that some horses swell like this because they are allergic to the tick bites while other are not. I put vetrcin on the bites when she gets them now and that seems to help. They're normally gone in a day or two.

Hmm I never thought of ticks! We have them, just not a lot. I've only ever removed two off my cat in my entire life.
