So about two weeks ago I was at a rodeo in Cody and noticed this on my mares hind leg. She hasn't been lame, it's soft and doesn't seem to be tender. My first thought was a wind puff. Weird thing is when I check her in the morning, swelling is down, at night, after she's been in the heat all day it's worse. Makes me think that maybe heat has something to do with it. Have a call into my vet but he won't be back in town til Thursday. Advice please?

Looks like a wind puff to me...but I've only seen a few.
I had a gelding that got one on the outside of a hind leg....after several weeks if finally went away on it's own.

Looks like Wind puff.  My mare has several on her back legs.  Doesn't cause any problems for her, but her doesn't come and  go  so not sure about yours

we had a horse with something similar to that. It wound up being built up fluid within the tendon sheath and was causing lameness. The vet had to go in and make an incision on the sheath to drain the fluid. He said it would always build up like that but if we kept applying a DMSO mixture he gave us after every ride, he wouldn't retain the fluid in the sheath and not be lame again. He made a full recovery and worked like a champ afterwards! We sold him and a boy is still roping calves off of him and his sister even stole him for some goat tying runs lol!! I wouldnt stress too much if it isn't causing any lameness.

My suggestion if you can afford get an ultrasound!! my gelding has similar lumps along with some swelling. hes had it the 3 years ive owned him. I was told by 2 vets it was a wind puff. it wasnt till later when i started having issues with him (he was fine the first 2.5 years) that i took him to a specialist for an ultrasound.
It appears at some point he has severely twisted the ankle and damaged the tendons around the fetlock joint. the damage must have been great enough that there was remodeling and it made boney growths (best way to describe it similar to bone spurs) all over the tendons. This is causing the lumps and swelling. Now Im facing injections into the fetlock to attempt to alleviate some of the swelling and discomfort.
To be safe get an ultrasound i learned the hard way JMO

Has anyone found that heat makes then worse? The first time I noticed them it was really hot, like temps in the 90s. Early mornings the swelling was gone, in the evenings after she was in the heat they were worse. Our weather changed yesterday, temps in the 70s w rain. They never even showed up yesterday

I would def have a vet look at it. Might just be a wind puff. Could be something else.

Broken blood vessel? Could have simply hit herself. Ice/ cold water and rest if that's what it is... " The most common thing is usually the most common thing..." Treat it like you would treat yourself if you had a big broken vessel. You know like when you hit your hand hard and it hurts like heck, and swells up red. If your horse didn't have hair you could see if it was red and bleeding under the surface, but obviously you can't. They hurt like heck, but just need time to heal.

I think it is a wind puff.  During the heat of the day is she standing in a stall or run in to get away from the heat, flies, etc?  If so, it is probably because she is standing.  In the coolness she's moving around more and grazing and with every step she takes, she's pumping the extra fluid away from her lower leg.

Any recommendations for treating the wind puff? Was considering doing a dmso/dex mixture and applying it for a few days. Any other suggestions?

If it is a windpuff give HA iv or glucosamine iv the next day the wind puff will be gone and stay gone for a few days.
