My gelding feels off at the lope. He feels maybe slightly tender footed at the trot but otherwise he seems sound, lands evenly, reaches with both front and back nicely but at the lope he doesn't feel right. It is worse one direction than the other. One direction he collects up nicely and keeps a nice bend and lift in the ribcage but the other way he wants to get flat and not keep the lift. It feels almost as though his front and hind are not together. Like they are on a different beat. Almost as though he is trotting in the front and loping in the back. He technically is not trotting in the front but that is how it feels since the beats are not in sync. No he is not crossfiring or anything like that. It feels as though he has a shorter choppier stride in the front than in his hind (almost reminds me of a pleasure horse "troping"). What can this be a sign of? What should I look for? I want to have ideas of what could be going on before I take him to have a soundness eval done. I like being able to read up on issues myself so I know what the different treatments/outcomes could be.

Thanks!

If you are able, I would have someone video you riding him at the lope and trot.  It would likely give you a much better idea of what he is doing.

Have someone lead him away from you at a trot, then bring it in to a 30 ft circle going both ways. Make sure this is on concrete for best results. Don't watch his feet, watch his shoulders and neck carriage. Don't let your horse leader mess with his face, just keep him on a loose lead. That should help you see something.

Ck his stifles and SI.  My rodeo horse had sore stifles and SI .  I described it has it felt line she had a flat tire.  I had a hair  analysis done and it showed that she was weak in left stifle and SI.  Exactly what the vet had injected.  I now have her on herbs to strengthen that area.

Well I know he has weak stifles....we have been working on that over the past year. He has always had a click in his stifles and they can give him trouble now and then so I know to keeping working on them. I have also been thinking SI. He is a longer bodied horse and I am having a terrible time building his topline. We have been working on that for the past month.

My gelding is a "troper" to. Drives me nuts having to stay after him to move his feet. Interested in more feedback as well.
