I have a 10 yr old gelding that has started getting very very mild of heave like sympoms, very little coughing, no temp or very little mucus discharge, after having to be stalled for two weeks because of a parred out abscess,in a humid, stall with no electricity due to my stalls gettin flooded out and having I borrow my next door neighbors. As soon as I heard the cough, got the vet out, said not quite the heaves but just airways are iritated from pollutants, put him on antibiotics and dex for 10 -14 days, he is almost done, sounds ok, coughs a time or two just standing there in the pasture, If I round pen him (Not to exercise just to see if it'll enduce coughing) he only did it once and then that's it for the remainder, I just bought some air power to see if this would help. I wet down his hay, he gets 24/7 access to pasture and fans. Anyone with experience with this product?

I tried it on 2. My stud and a gelding. It never did a thing. Not sure if it was just my horses or what. I think I still have some around here somewhere.

I use it with great success. If you think your horse is near heaves I would use this , RECoup from Saratoga Vet Products along with Bio-hesper C/k, these build the lungs back up..When they get the heaves they over extend the capillaries making them weak.

Is your horse a bleeder? My horse isn't a bleeder and doesn't have a issue coughing but I do use air power before my runs.

Air Powerβ„’ is an all-natural aid in the relief of minor coughs due to irritation. This all natural formula uses ingredients such as Honey, Menthol, Eucalyptus Oil, Lemon Juice, Aloe Vera, Apple Cider Vinegar, and Ethanol to help stop a horse’s cough. Usually one dose of Air Powerβ„’ will stop a horse from coughing all day. Safe for pre-event, race, or performances. Air Powerβ„’ is cost effective as you only need one fourth as much Air Powerβ„’ as you do of most other products.

FACT: Menthol has a cooling effect that helps relieve irritation, thus acting as an antitussive (cough reliever) and Eucalyptus is a known expectorant (loosens phlegm in the respiratory tract, making it easier to expel the phlegm during a cough).

I use air power 1x am 1x pm while there is coughing present- I also give 25cc daily of FRENCH'S mustard for 5 days- usually cough is gone agfter that - I know it sounds weird but I had a vet tell me to do that years ago and it works---( sometimes they get blisters in their throats from dust, mold, damp pens, or weed type allergy) but i'm telling you it works every time-- its cheap and it won't harm them at all -and I always give a little shot of air power before a run just to be safe

My horse is not a known bleeder,he has never coughed during exercise, not even after a run. I believe the start of his breathing issue were brought on by me having to stall him due to a bad abscess that needed to be parred and 6" of rain that flooded my stalls the next day so I had to rent the neighbors barn that has no electricity for me to run fans and with little to no ventation, just the top door open, he was in shavings, new hay. High humidity and heat indexes. This is All my fault! I feel bad but I was between a rock and a hard place with his foot cut open. But I acted immediately as soon as I heard the cough.called the vet , Started him on antibiotics, and dex for inflamation, got him outside, under fans, out the shavings and wet the hay. After two weeks he still has a lingering cough. Does a possible upper respirtory infection take a month or so to completely cease coughing or since this has happened will he always do so now? And I don't know what else to do? Next step is prob back to the vet. I'm hoping I can get this cleared up and this doesn't become a persistent thing:/

Thanks guys, I'm thinkin of continuing the air power and adding hesperdin/ck to his diet to help his lungs.(wouldnt hurt)
I am also worried about exercising him and creating possible damage. Does anyone have experiences like this?how long were you off, and when did you deside to get back on? Do you continue To ride even with a slight cough? With normal vitals? I have a barrel race in a month I'm nervious about running him with this going on.

I have used it successfully on mild cases. My mare that is full blown heaves it has little to no effect on. It is Dex or nothing for her. But for a mild cough it worked for me.

I found the Air Power to be helpful and easy to syringe into them, also Hilton Herbs Cough Free powder works equally well, if not better......BUT it is vile...horrible...smelling and I'm sure tasting stuff, and a pain to mix up and syringe. The label says add to their feed.... If there is a horse out there, that eats this stuff....he'll eat anything LOL.

Do you exercise and continue on a horse with a mild cough? He just coughs once or twice just standing there, when he trots he coughs once (guess to clear his airways) and nothing after that. No coughing post exercise. He has had three weeks off and has finished all of his medication

Thank you all!! I appreciate any/all advise on this. I used to work at a vet clinic a long time ago and seen horses come thru with different degrees of breathing issues. i have just never experienced one of my own.
