How do you know what kind of noseband to get? Like rope, steel, chain? Obviously the rope is probably the mildest noseband of the three but how do you pick between steel and the bicycle chain?

This is just my opinion, and hopefully others can provide theirs, but I think that if you need anything more than a rope noseband, your issues are beyond what a bit can fix.

I was thinking some of them looked pretty severe but I know of people that run a lot of horses in hackamores that have just a steel noseband and those horses seem to ride around pretty light and stuff so idk if they are as severe as they look

I love my combo bit with a rope nose.  I don't really see the need for a steel or bike chain noseband. I'd be interested it hear the "whys" as to why someone needs it or chooses to use it.

I think there is a misconception about rope/chain/steel.  I know for a fact that a chain-not bicycle- is very light, the thought process is that the chain conforms to the face unlike rope or steel.  All types have their place and in the right hands are obviously useful.

My combo bits have a leather noseband, smooth, no ridges, even pressure, no sharp edges, and has give, IMO leather is the mildest.

Each noseband material has pros and cons.

Rope, softer, has ridges, has some give, not as much as the leather, not even pressure due to ridges, and doesn't conform as well as leather. No sharp edges.

Chain, has ridges, applies uneven pressure due to the ridges, has straight pieces in each linkage therefore conforms in more of a boxlike shape leaving pressure point. The sharp edges can dig into a horse when pressure is applied.

Steel, smooth, no sharp edges, no give, does not conform, only applies pressure on point of contact.
