Expert Posts: 1612 Location: Cocoa, Florida	I've never delt with the rain rot like I have this rainy season!!! We are getting an incredible amount of rain on the Florida east coast and my horses are suffering from it!! I finally beat the crud on my geldings back legs and then turn around and my poor filly comes in just swollen from back to toe. I can barley touch her. She has welts that almost look like stings on her back and top of butt, so I gave her a shot of Dex and scrubbed her down with antifungal soap. I also used BEVS skin repair on them and I used Scope/listerine mix with baby oil which seemed to control and clear up my geldings, but my question is what can I do to get my fillys skin under control or should I take her to the vet because I'm out of dex???

Veteran Posts: 152 Location: wherever my gypsy soul lands	Keep doing what your doing. This is my 2nd summer here and you just have to stay consistent on treating it. Pain in the neck I know. And the welts/swelling sound like she got into an ant pile. My poor gelding does the same thing. Rolls in the ants then swells up like a balloon. I give him cold water baths and drench him in fly spray mixed with baby oil.

Veteran Posts: 231 Location: On My Horse!	I keep mine inside and out of the weather as much as possible. I know sometimes that's not an option though. Dex is great for treating problem areas and definitely helps them from being super ichy. I use a product called Krud Zapper. It's a miracle product lol. I apply a small amount on the affected areas and the next day the fungus literally rinses off. Which is nice because when you use antifungal shampoos and scrub it off they get sore and irritated. Florida summers are tough! Good luck!

Miss Southern Sunshine Posts: 7427 Location: South Central Florida	I used captan (not sure on spelling) I get it in the gargening department...it's a treatment for fungus on plants. I cut it very weak with water and spray it on her legs. I use diluted bleach water on their butts if they get it there. We have it every year on their backs and a little on their legs...but this year (way less rain than last year) I have had a problem with swelling in legs. Never had that before. Normally just crusty crud on the front of their legs...their shins :) I don't have stalls so I can't pen them up. If I did, I would put them up before dusk and out after the dew was gone...but for now, I just treat it when we get it.
