Neat pictures!

Would you care to explain something to me that I've always wondered? Why do some people work their calves this way versus through corrals and a head chute?  One of my many random thoughts... But I'm guessing overall it's less stressful for the calves?

If I had to hazard a guess... You can work cattle like this anywhere... as opposed to setting up a chute and driving them to it..

If done correctly it is a lot less stressful on the cattle. You need riders who are quiet & ride around very slowly through the cattle. You also need good ropers. If you have good ropers & a good ground crew you can actually work cattle a lot faster this way. I remember to start with we had trouble with one guy he wanted to rope like you do when you are team roping, rush into the cattle & swing his rope a lot, you don't want to scar the cattle, you want them to stand quietly.

Komet is also right you can work cattle with out pens and a chute. We were in a big pen. In big pastures you have to have good riders to hold the cattle.

A lot people think cowboying is riding fast, chasing cattle & swinging your rope, when it's really about how quiet & easy you can keep the cattle. You want to catch, work, doctor, anything you do to slow & easy & with as less stress as possible.
