I came off my horse and landed HARD on my hip.  X-rays negative for fracture but it was twice the size of my right hip.  Most of the swelling is gone, but now I'm noticing the swollen area feels like a water balloon under the skin and I can feel it jiggle.  It is really grossing me out!  I'll call my doctor tomorrow but was wondering if anyone here had experience with this and what to do for it in the meantime.  Thanks.

Ha! Welcome to my world... I got bucked off in January and landed on my hip as well. No fracture, just very swollen and painful. What I thought would take about 10 days to get over still hurts today. I didn't ride for 6 weeks, because I simply couldn't. Now it is bareable, it just hurts when I run...

I hope you will do better with your "hump". Sorry you are in pain.

When did this happen?  If it is fluid, it is either serum ("seroma"), or blood (hematoma).  Chances are both will gradually reabsorb without any problems.  If it is blood, it might be deep and it could show up as a bruise that might appear to get larger before it gets smaller.  That's normal, because the blood diffuses to the surface and other directions.  Rarely they can become infected.
I agree that checking with your doc is a good idea.

Thanks for the reply.  The fall happened on the 6th.  It really was freaking me out!  It doesn't hurt when I press on it and there is no bruise on the surface but I'm black, blue, yellow and green in places near it!  I'll give my doctor a call tomorrow.
