Ever since we moved we have hAd to drive back and forth to use my dad's truck...HUGE PAIN! So we've sort of been looking for a truck. Caleb has a friend that has an 01 dodge cummins. 4 wheel drive, 120,000 miles, towing package has been taken care of really good. Has a brand new tranny to put in...old one is still good but he has been upgrading things in it. He's asking $13,000 for it. Opinions?!

Why does he have a brand new tranny if the one in the truck is good?

Idk but we are putting the new one in if we buy it. He's an older man and just buys, does stuff to them and then sells when he has something else he wants to buy.

I don't drive dodges but a lot of people like them. I think the transmissions are their weak link. But a lot of them have run a lot of miles if you drive them normal.

Neither of us have ever had a dodge so we don't know.

Sounds like a decent deal.  Low miles on an 01.  It will get decent fuel mileage, and there are so many options you can play with on them.  I assume it is an auto.

All we pull with are Dodges, and the only issue we have had just came up in my 03.  I have to change out the lift pump.

ALL depends on how it was taken care of. A lot of the older dodges were severely abused. Maybe have a mechanic really look it over first. If it totally checks out mechanically and cosmetically, then it's worth that price. But if the dash is cracked or paint is severely fading (common element in that model dodge) I'd ask him to drop price. Is it a 2500 or 3500? Use KBB as well. I've learned people don't replace a transmission unless there's something wrong with the original, because there's really no reason to drop thousands of dollars into a tranny for no reason. I have a 98 1500 that is amazing and I've had it since 2008. I had a 99 cummins 2500 that was ABUSED. Total rip off. In awful condition. Paid $6500 for it, thinking I could pull with it for a while and kind of as a project. 2 trannies later it was time to give it up. We only had it for 8 months and just couldn't put any more money into it. Probably ended up paying $13,000 after all the repairs and it still wasn't nice! The cummins engine is unstoppable though and will DEFINITELY pull a 2 horse, plus way more! It's the rest of the truck to watch out for! Good luck, these are very fun trucks!

I am a huge fan of the 5.9 liter cummins,
best engine on the market in my opinion,
I have had two and about to buy another one.
My first had 350 k miles on it when I sold it, the body come apart around the motor.
My second was my current driver, and 05 3/4 ton 4x4 with a 5.9 cummins. It was totalled in Austin a couple weeks ago and I am still sick over it. The engine at 202k miles was absolutely perfect.
I will be replacing it with the same truck as soon as I can find one.
If that truck body hasnt been abused, 13k is cheap on a 5.9.
Right now, the 07 5.9 Cummins run 26-32k with over 100,000 miles on them.
Just look on auto trader ...

We had a 2001 Dodge with a Cummins in it, and we liked it. We really like Cummins diesel engines though (we are on our third Dodge with a Cummins in it). Our's had an automatic in it and we never had an issue with. With the miles on it, I think on a retail level it is worth the $13000 he is asking for it if it is a good, solid, nice truck not needing anything.  Where we are at (in Montana) it would bring the price all day long with only 120K miles...for us out here, anything under 170K miles on a diesel is low, LOL.

No to the auto tranny.  But if it's a manual transmission with a Cummins, and an '01 with relatively low miles (and 120k is low for one of those) then yes.  It should get bang up fuel mileage.

It's an automatic, 2500. Actually is really nice! We believe he won't rip us off but you never know...we Kelly blue booked it and it came out just over what he is asking. He has already dropped the price some for us. He wasn't planning on selling it yet but SO was telling him we were needing a truck so he offered this up to us

I have an '01 Dodge Cummins - 2500 - but mine is a 6 speed stick.  The only "issues" I had w/the truck was during warranty time & had to have the lift pump & something else replaced.  I have less miles on my truck & personally wouldn't take that little for it.  ;)   I think they are great trucks, but I personally do not like automatics, & that is due to the crappy Ford I had that had an auto - scared me enough to steer clear of automatics!

Sounds like a good deal, but I don't know much about auto trans Cummins. Ours are standards. I wouldn't even take $12000 for my '95, so that is a good price.

Being a 2001, you should be able to search the Internet for common problems so you can be sure the problems have been taken care of, or that there are no expensive fixes around the corner. That's what I usually do. When I'm looking at used vehicles, I think a good deal is the low end of private party value. But, that's just my opinion on the value.

Seems pricey to me. I have a 2004 Dodge 2500 with 5.9, auto, 4x4 and 230,xxx miles on it. Replaced turbo and u joints. Truck is still going strong and can out pull my 2000 Ford f350. Since I got a larger trailer my hubby wants me using the bigger truck to pull the 4h with 8' short wall and I admit the Ford is more stable with it, but I run out of gas pedal when accelerating onto the interstate and won't in the dodge. Sooo today I bought a 2007 Dodge 3500 4x4 and now will have the best of both worlds. Bigger truck and my fave engine. So I now have two hauling trucks for sale and driving to Texas next week to pick up my newer one. Can't wait! So anybody needing a good truck I can highly recommend Dodge with the 5.9. Will be sad to see my other one go :( many fond hauling memories.

13k seems pricey to me also. Do a Craigslist search in your area. I just did one in my area for '01 Cummins and found many under 10k. Here is a nice one: http://lexington.craigslist.org/cto/4587467405.html
