So after trying to chicken out for the last several weeks because we weren't really ready to be running with these kind of horses yet and I had tore my knee up to weeks ago we went ahead and ran . I ran my daughters 4yr old filly and there were only 7 other 4yr olds running. The first day I rode too tentative and just didn't ask her for enough speed, the second day we went .7 faster but hit. I wasn't disappointed though she really tried for me and made big improvements with room still to get faster. I only have maybe 10 competition runs on her and this was her first trip away from home my lack of cash kept me home more than I had anticipated. I can't wait to try again it was a good experience and everyone was very nice, no one laughed at me loud enough for me to hear at least !

Congrats, it takes guts to put it on the line when youre not 100% sure of your horse.

Why did you decide to run as a 4 yo vs a 5 yo and next time would you wait until their 5th year?

My daughter really wants to give it a try so im just curious.

I'm only to say what I have heard. I just bought a mare that is 4 and will futility next year. But it is my understanding I can't run her at any BFA affiliated futuritires unless she is 4 yrs old

I don't know much about it but we decided to run at 4 because we just needed to get going and the filly has a good mind. If I thought she couldn't handle it I would have waited. I do think that unless I have an indoor arena to ride in through the winter I would wait until 5 it is hard in the cold country to get enough time on them. My daughter was going to ride her but they were really struggling to get their timing together so rather than frustrate them both I rode her. It was fun and I can't wait to try again.

Thanks everyone we really love this filly and can't wait to be able to do more. My poor pocket book can only handle so much travel and entry fees this year.

Congrats on a positive experience! I miss futurities-being a teacher doesn't really allow you to go much. Keep us in the loop! She sure is cute!

I don't think you can run at any BFA events as a 5 year old.... Make sure you know what you're limiting yourself to if you decide to wait.
