Location: Is it Summer Yet? | My cousin ran over her dog Thursday night, late evening sometime. She got him with the front right truck tire. He's a big dog, really not sure what kind other than he's not pure breed. He's got to be over 6 foot if he were to stand up, he's eye to eye with my 5 year old son. Really furry, hairy big dog. Anyways think she's looking for me to tell her if this dog should get put down so I wanted some opinions. He isn't eating. tried wet dog food, normal dog food, chicken breats. She's a RN, and she's "nursing" him extremely. He's had 2 IV's I have no idea how much, one thursday night, one friday night. He's drinking but what he drinks he throws up. I think she got him x-ray'd nothing is broken. The vet did do an ultrasound. Vet didn't see anything. In our town we have a large animal vet and a small animal vet. Small animal vet doesn't have emergency hours, so the large animal vet checked the dog out.
I went out and saw him today. He walked about the length of a standard town block with me today. In that time he pee'd twice, tried to poop, nothing came out but he also hasn't eaten since Thursday. He also threw up some bile. Other than suggesting she take this dog to the small animal vet and figure out what is actually wrong with him and then make an educated decision, which I'm not sure if she'll do. Do you guys have any suggestions what might be wrong with him? I have her talked into giving him till Tuesday after the stat; but honestly I have no idea if she should put him down or not. Will he come out of this with more time? |

Location: Pacific Northwest | What part of his body got ran over? One time my dad ran over our yellow lab/pekingese mix (he was only a foot tall at the shoulders, not a big dog) and broke his nose. Dog was absolutely miserable for a few days but he still wanted to eat and drink. |

Yes and I would have her stop with the IVs...could be doing more harm than good. |

Location: Is it Summer Yet? | Trying to get her to turn off the registerd nurse in her, having no luck with that one. She told me to day she should have been measure his abdonmin girth so she would know if he had distention. Just reading through texts she's giving him penicillion in case he has an internal infection. As far as I know the IV's have stopped cause a friends dad is a vet he said if he gets dehydrated she would have her answer what to do. And as long as she's doing IV's he'll never get dehydrated. |

Location: Monticello, AR | So she can hit a vein in a dog to run an IV? I can give a vein shot in horses all day long, but never tried to find the vein in a dogs paw....interesting. |

You can give fluids under the skin, without hitting a vein. It bubbles up a bit and the body absorbs it.
They hit the veins for IVs typically on a front leg and put a catheter in.
I'd tell her to take the dog in, just in case. The fluids won't hurt him but she needs to know if the organs are working properly, or if what she's doing is needed. |

Location: Florida.. | thats my question.. take dog to a regular small animal vet.. might have internal injuries to intestine or stomach. STOP the Ivs.. he isnt going to drink if shes doing that..dog gets run over......................go to a dog vet. |

I dont know what his size has to do with how hes feeling, but she took him to a vet already had x-rays done on him and vet didnt find anything and still having problems, then I would take him to a different vet for another opinion, shes not a vet but a nurse, he needs a vet to see what is going on with him. |

Location: Is it Summer Yet? | The small animal vet was out of town for the weekend. He's back tomorrow, she's going to try to get an appointment with him. Knowing the vet, her dog will be in tomorrow with him. He'll make time for the dog. I have never tried to give a dog an IV before but knowing her she would have hit a vein. She's a perfectionist.

I only commented on the size because I was looking for opinions on what might be wrong with this dog. A little dog or a medium size dog probably would have died instantly. This is a big dog that lived through getting run over so now what are some potential injuries he might have. |

Small town, dog vet is trying to retire. He was away for the weekend and has no emergency hours either. It's a town that people aren't moving to, going to be a ghost town within 10 years. |

| I have a friend that has a dog that is half Chinese Crested and half Mini Aussie--he is not a large dog. He got run over by the back duals about 5 years ago. He is fine today. Unless the dog is in pain I would see what happens. However, if he has liver or kidney damage it may be months before he dies. Watch for blood in urine or stool. There is a real good chance that he will be OK. |

Location: Red Raiderland | My Standard Dachshund(18 lbs) was run over by our Gator with the front and back passenger tires and I thought we broke her back. She was screaming/yelping in pain and probably scared out of her mind. My poor girl.  Anyway, we rushed her to our vet (emergency after hours, of course, they never get hurt or sick during normal hours  ) and he was on another emergency so she did not get seen for about an hour, felt like five hours. By the time he got to the clinic she had stopped yelping out if even slightly being moved and he looked her over and bent her back every which directions and she didn't cry once. She was one sore girl for about a week and today you would never know it even happened. He told us that we would be surprised how many dogs are hit or run over with vehicles and survive. They are tough little or big boogers. I sure hope her dog is fine. Poor guy. |

Our begal got run over by a truck. Fractured her pelvis and tore some ligaments. Shes walking on the fractured pelvis and limping on the torn ligaments. Could be some severe bruising thats causing pain. Especially if its bruising along the spine it would make using the restroom very painful and uncomfortable. If he is eating and drinking fine try putting a little cooking grease from bacon in it... put it in his food/water and itll make his stool a little looser and easier to gom . |

Location: Is it Summer Yet? | Drinking still not eating. Thank-you to those that have posted their stories. I do hope he checks out fine, more hope she takes him in tomorrow rather than waiting for his appointment on Thursday for his shots. |
