I have a barrel horse who has tons of talent, but wont run as hard as I know he can. Without running, he still puts me in the 1D at every show but I know he has tons to give. This is not a vet problem, 3 vets have looked him over and there is no problems like that. thanks

If I was hitting the 1D, I probably wouldn't try to change him. :)

I just started feeding HealthyCoat and I feel like my horse is running harder. I bought it to add some fat to his diet and help his coat, (and they also sponsor our local IBRA) and he has shined up like a new penny. It is all natural and perhaps something that might help you out. He feels like he is all around feeling better on it too. I am liking the product a lot.

Thank you! I have tried Healthy Coat on him once and noticed a coat difference, but it was only a sample bottle that lasted about a week and a half but I will look into it again

Maybe ulcers? My mare was still clocking pretty decently but she seemed so dull. She didn't even seem to run home hard, she was just kind of "blah". Never refused the gate or anything like that, but she didn't seem right. I gave her UlcerCureOTC for a month and then started her on SmartGutUltra and she's got her fire back.

I would say if it isnt worms or anemia I would think he just needs to be sprinted on the track to blow out the cobwebs

Maybe put him on a blood builder like lixotinic/EQ Royal to see if that gives him more fire

I have several friends using Protandim on there horses with great results - $40 month so its cost effective

what size shows are you running at? and when he puts you in the 1D does he put you in the money or the cracks?

Have you pulled blood for a CBC and chem panel just for curiosity's sake? you may want to try lixotonic or red cell.

I would suggest blood draw and possibly red cell or mega cell. Also maybe take him somewhere where you can breeze him. I know it really frees up my filly a LOT. I do alot of speed transitions with her while I'm breezing her using my body.

Being in the 1d can be bittersweet. In one moment you are super happy (or satisfied) that you made the 1d, and in the same breath, annoyed that you didn't place where you really wanted to be. Like others have said, consider the size of the show, the competition, and a verge times. If you truly believe that your horse is not clocking to his fullest potential then consider the following possibilities:
BleedinG
Ulcers
Mineral imbalance
Soreness
Allergies
Your warm up routine (are you warming up too soon and/or too much and possibly wearing him out mentally?)

the shows I normally run at have anywhere from 20 riders (a smaller show) or most of my shows have at least 75 in the open
