Location: Oregon | Being in the printing/binding industry for 35 yrs. Yes, the customer had to sign off on this. I used to do OK's for out of state customers but still needed to send PDF's for type. I had to approve type and color again. Very sad!!! |

I had a teacher that I had to proofread the test before I could even take it. There were so many grammar and spelling mistakes that I couldn't stand it.
I learned the difference between its and it's in one of the Series of Unfortunate Events books. The rest I remember going over in school. |

Location: Midwest Farmer's Daughter: Central Illinois | I corrected a teacher in sixth grade, the entire class told me to shut up & that I was wrong because she was the teacher so of course she was correct, she looked it up in the dictionary right there when I wouldn't let it die.
I won.
She was a nice woman, a good teacher, just had a crappy sense of homophones. I've noticed it's pretty standard anymore & there isn't an age range that is stronger or weaker in their knowledge or lack thereof when it comes to correct grammar.
The word she used was 'bare', by the way, she should have used 'bear'. |

Location: Blissfully happy Giants fan!!! | I am so glad I had good teachers. My dad told me something when I was younger (actually he told me several times) and I will never forget it. He told me if you can write intelligently you will never not have a good job. And I have a good job and I use my writing skills!!
My dad also always told me I was gifted when it came to writing and I am sure there is truth to that too. Don't judge me on this board though. It is an internet board and while I somewhat pay attention, if I miss some spelling and grammar because I didn't proof read it, whatever. It doesn't kill me.
If I ever have kids, reading and writing would be two things they will KNOW how to do and know how to do well... |

I agree with you on that. I thought it might be more of a local or regional problem. But, if that happened here, you would be more likely to have a teacher tell you the grammar doesn't matter because you know what they mean, and they put a lot of hard work into making it look nice, so leave the kids alone and don't say anything bad about their efforts. And these kids seem to think it's acceptable to just shut down and quit trying if anyone critiques their work. The bar is so low. |

Most school fundraisers in my experience are through the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) or Parent Teacher Association (PTA). The notes regarding fundraisers are usually written by a parent in the organization & copied by the parent before anyone realizes it. Retyping and recopying is not always an option especially when conserving paper. Also, those parents work very hard, thankless hours that others would not. Offending them or embarrassing them by pointing out their poor grammar skills is sometimes like biting the hand that feeds you. Was the individual class raising money to benefit only this particular class? Most elementary fundraisers are for the entire school. I am just throwing another possibility out there to consider. I make corrections when I see them. I don't always have time to read everything sent home by others.

My mother's folks lived in the 600 block of West Englewood ave. At the time it was the north edge of the south side.. This school is about 5 blocks south of there.. The whole time I visited there from the 60s through the 80s it was always poor.. Her folks were the only white family for blocks around.. but there was a mixed couple living in the house next-door. A white man and a black lady.. The house is gone now. It burned down after the Gfolks sold it and moved to Park Ridge.. |
