Hey guys, been a long time since I've been on here. Anyhow, I'm having an issue with myself in my runs and wondered if you all could give me some pointers. My horse was trained by a very good barrel horse trainer. The way he is trained is once you run him after turning first, you run straight at 2nd and 3rd barrel and at last minute you sit down, rate and he snaps out and turns. Problem is I'm having a hard time doing this myself. I think the main problem is judging how close I run to that barrel before I sit down and rate. You cannot drag on him in the turn. You just sit and use you legs. My trainer watched me last weekend and she told me (even though I thought I was), that I wasn't running straight to second and I was letting him dive in the turn which was throwing him on front end and was almost making me a lawn dart, popping me up and over. My trainer has gotten on him to show me how he does it and OMG, he runs a sweet pattern. So I guess what I'm asking is if some of you have this type of horse that is trained like mine, how close do you run up before you sit and rate for the turn. Any tips would be greatly appreciated! I would also like to add that even though I sometimes don't make the prettiest runs, we still make qualifying runs, I just want to clear up the popping up issue and the distance issue. Sorry for the lengthy post!

It is hard to comment without seeing a video, and if you have a coach that person would have the best plan for you.

I would also suggest teaming up with the person who trained the horse.

The other thing I do with myself or people I help is put markers, pylons where the person needs to look so they can search for that spot when they leave the previous barrel.

Also practice makes perfect, I do a lot of visualizing, a lot of walking patterns to get the feel

I have no depth perception.  I can't tell how far away I am from the barrel, so I don't even sit till I am right there.  Sounds like kind of the same thing.  A well trained horse should be able to adjust should the approach not be perfect.  Teaching a horse how to fix it when it is wrong is more important that just having them know what to do if it is right.  In my humble opinion.

I have seen "trainers" jump all over the riders for making the least little bobble and blaming the poor run on one single mistake.  This irritates me.  It doesn't build confidence for the rider, and gives them an out for leaving a hole in the training.  When they show you, there is no pressure, usually it is at their arena.
I suggest you just keep working with your horse till you two mesh.  You know what to do, you just need to knwo whe to do it.

Sounds you have a very nice horse. I would not be asking for any pointers on here, you will get all kinds of different pointers and you will be really confused, you say you have a trainer helping you and they ride this horse really great so I would stick with asking for help from her/him. How long have you had this horse, just wondering.

This. If you trainer can ride the horse well the let her help you. It will save you lots of time and aggravation

My main barrel horse is the same way.  On my first barrel I don't sit until the barrel is even with my leg.  She will turn a perfect barrel every time if I stick to this.  If I sit too soon she will turn, then I have to really manipulate her to get around the barrel.  She is automatic on the pattern but will turn when I sit.  If we knock a barrel, it is always my fault.  She runs straight to the second and third unless I give her the wrong signals.  She goes exactly where I tell her too.  If I accidently pull on her she goes the way I pull.  She tought me very well to be light handed.  Good luck with yours and hard as it may be, don't try to change the way he is trained to suit your riding.  Change the way you ride to suit the way he is trained.  It took me about 3 seasons to finally "get" with this mare.  She actually made me a better rider.  We are now easily crusing 1D, 2D times but it took a while to get there.  If you like the horse, don't give up either.  He sounds like a nice horse.
