| We just moved out of state and it was hectic getting everything ready - so my horses were off for about 2.5 to 3 weeks at most - but still turned out. They don't seem unfit - but how many weeks riding do you generally do in this case before hauling again? I have a good idea but wanted to see what everyone else's opinion/experience is on the matter. Thanks in advance! |

| if they were before go they be alright at least i would but mine were always in a big pasture it wpild be different if they were stalled |

| I listened to a seminar from a well known vet and he said horses hold their fitness for several weeks. He went into great depth about their lung capacity and their muscle tones. All of which were a bit over my head but seemed legit lol.
With that said, I usually like to have at least a few rides in before hauling.  |

This is what I heard as well! Glad to hear you heard the same! They will have been ridden for a solid week - then was thinking of entering them - but don't want to take it too fast. However, they don't seem less fit - aren't winded, and are cooling down very quickly after their work outs! |

Location: Kansas | If they're in shape when you turn 'em out for a couple weeks, I'd ride a couple times and make sure they seem fit, then go enter up. I'm currently debating this same type of thing with my old bay gelding. He hasn't run since July 24th but I've been riding him or ponying him 2-3 times a week and his fitness seems to be coming back, but I still haven't decided if he's ready for the big outdoor pens I'm going to this weekend & next. He's had some respiratory issues and I don't want to overdo it. I'd run him in a 14 second pen no problem but the 16.5 to 18 second pens are another story. |

I agree with this. As long as you moved to the same type of climate and they were in good shape before, I'd have no problem running them after a week or workouts. |

| Thanks everyone! It was hotter than they were used to the first week we were here (gave them that week off) - but the past week has been similar weather to what they are used to! One only had 2 weeks off and I think she's for sure ready - the other had 2.5-3 weeks off and seems ready too! |

| My vet said horses don't lose their fitness as quick as people do, contingent on if they are turned out and moving around. It does not take the same amount of time to leg them back up as the time off. I always heard it takes at least 6 weeks for them to start losing fitness and muscle tone. I think a rest is good for them, makes mine raring to go!
