A few weeks ago I noticed my horse's rear superficial flexor tendon was thickened from bottom of hock to top of fetlock. She never took a lame step on it. I got the swelling down and noticed a "knob" on the inside of the tendon about halfway down that was kind of hard (not squishy but not rock hard either). I brought her to the vet (equine specialist) and the vet mainly just had me trot her and told me that she was completely sound in the backend and thought she probably just banged it but didn't tear anything and that I should be fine to ride her. Well I rode that day just at a walk, kept her in a stall that night because of the rain. The next morning she was completely swollen again but still never took a lame step. I made another vet apt and this time ultrasounded it and the vet could not find anything in the ultrasound. It is not completely swollen anymore but the knob is still there and a little swelling seems to come and go. Vet told me to continue to ride her at a walk for one week with very little trotting, and then add in more trotting and a little loping the 2nd week, then more loping the 3rd week and after the 3rd week I should be able to run her.

Anyone have any idea what could be going on? I am scared to do much with her in fear that I could cause something minor to turn into something major. She has never been lame on it, it doesn't seem to bother her when palpated, it does get warm from time to time, the knob is still there but seems to be getting a little less noticeable, there is some squishyness (word? lol) on the medial side of the knob, the whole tendon seems a tiny bit thicker than her other rear leg.

Possibly an old injury causing a flare up? Just a bad bruise that is taking forever to heal? Any ideas??

Sounds like she strained the tendon.  I would use BOT quick wraps on her .  And I would add something like Structural Build and PainAway.  I know you said she is not lame but the Painaway will help with inflammation also.

My horse was never lame, I went to severa good vets trying to find out what was going on.  No one ultra sounded it and missed his strained suspensory.

can you get a second opinion? I had a horse come up with a swollen spot on his leg, also not lame.. Had him go to the vet just for a check up and the vet went on and on about how sound he was and how nice of a mover he was. I did that because he ducked off once the week before and I wanted him checked- he had never ducked before. After I got the all clear to go I ran him the next weekend and he ducked off both runs, and he never looked back. My horse was ruined mentally. My other vet ultrasounded him and found he blew his check ligament. Dr. Honnas did the surgery and I got a great prognosis.. but mentally he was done. A friend of mine bought him as a kid horse and has spent most of the year just doing lead line. she's finally entering him herself and she's getting clean runs out of him now. But he hurt himself in 2010 and it's now 2014 and he finally seems like he may be coming out of his funk.

I am trying to decide what I should do. Do I continue to ride her as though I am rehabbing her with light walking for a week and then slowly increase it? My vet suggested to keep her turned out which I agree is best for this particular horse. She has bad stifles as well so I don't think keeping her stalled would be super beneficial to her. The turn-out also has helped keep the swelling down. Do I get a second oppinion? The ultrasound didn't show anything?? Do I take her to another vet for another ultrasound? I cannot afford to keep throwing money at vets to come away knowing absolutley NOTHING more than I knew going in. I am starting to feel that the only thing vets are good for now is to write Rx. I am just frustrated and this horse has me at my wits end. She is NEVER sound. If it isn't one thing it's another. She is a freakin' rockstar when I can run her but I have only been able to enter her 3 times this year! It takes a long time to get her conditioned in the spring due to her stifles. I finally got her conditioned and running then of course at the 3rd rodeo I enter her in she slips out and stretches her stifle so she needed time off. Then after my 5th ride of slowly bringing her back she does this!!!
