| I think you end up with bigger races on a 5D because more people who aren't 1D people feel like they have a better shot at some $$.
I think an average race is cool because you can have 2 or 3 runs with screw ups and still make an average placing. Making the finals at some events seems to be more of a challenge. |

Location: Online | What are the splits with the 5D? 5D's only work if you have enough money in the pot and A LOT of people entered. They spread the money too far. Personally I don't like them.
Also, I don't like running more than twice in a weekend. So 2 runs and average.
Keep the fees low. You will get a lot more players with more horses if you keep your fees reasonable. I hate races that cost me over $500 a weekend when I have to win money on all 3 horses to get my money back. |

| Agree with a 5D and average. Entry fees should be comparable to what you can win. If it's only $1K added, no more than $40-50/run. If it's upwards of $5K added, I'd pay more.
Of course, entry fees are different in every region. This is SE. |

You can enter the average incentive if you want, it's based on 2 runs. |

| Hate to be the odd man or woman out here - but really don't like the 5 D format - too many holes are paid out in each division its getting harder to just win back your entry fees much less expenses |

Location: North Dakota | I'll be the odd one out here too. I am a parent that works full time and really struggle with 2 day races, I just don't go, they are too long and drawn out for this gal. :-/ We have a really awesome race here this weekend-(about 3 1/2 hrs from me) that is giving away a saddle and many super nice prizes and I'm struggling with not going because so many of my friends will be there and my horse is running pretty good, but I just cannot justify being away from my kids and hubby the whole weekend. So for me, single races with huge added money with 1/2 second 4 d splits are my favorite (we were second in the 4D at one of those races this summer and paid our entry fees for quite a few races after that) I think I need to start an association for "stick in the mud mothers" or something like that. :) |

| I like 2 go-rounds with an average. I, personally, like running 2x a weekend and not 3x. My mares are really honest and consistent and I would prefer just to do one run a day and a total of 2 runs a weekend tops. For those who like running 3x it's nice to have a Friday jackpot that does NOT count for the average - then Sat/Sun count for the average. |

Location: The edge of no where | For all 3 of the last comments...if you understand the way the format works at CC5D, I think you would be happy.
1. you can run 1 time or 3 times in a weekend.
2. Each run counts for a percentage of entry fees and added money paid out as 'day money'
3. Larger percentage of entry fees and added money goes into the pot and is part of the 'Big Money payout'...basically 3 days paid out as 1 race.
4. IF you want to run 2-3 times, you can enter the average incentive and it counts your 2 fastest runs (if you run 3 times) or just your 2 runs if you only enter twice.
It's pretty darn cool... I would prefer it go to a 4D on 1/2 splits instead of a 5D...but they do draw more entries as a 5D I guess.

LOL - and they started using rodeogo in the last couple of months so you can track real time placings as the race is going on... It's pretty cool, no wondering about what's been run. |

You must understand that in ND, there is probably not more than 500 barrel horses, so a $2000 money added single run race probably draws 150 horses, I think your set up sounds like a good one, I would probably be inclined to partake but sadly we don't have many like that and don't have the sponsors that would help us out.
Funny part about this, I told my hubby last week, that before I die, I want to run at those "big" races or maybe even put one on here. The ones that are $10K added with trailers for prizes type races that you see all glossed up in the barrel racing mags. CC5D sounds like the way to go. I might have to check into it when I get crazy enough to seriously think about a big race here. We do have a big 2 day event going on this weekend that is 2 runs with an average saddle/prizes, it's fun but I think you have to be REALLY fast or REALLY lucky to win average prizes and sadly I'm neither :) There is 300 plus entries. |

That format sounds rrally neat! Maybe once I have a trailer and my gelding is running nicely I'll make the five hour drive to one of their big added money events!!
OP, I like 4D (1/2 splits) with a short go. I guess I can't really say average because I've never really ran in one! I also like single slate bigger added money races (think Jud Little's set up or the Barrel Ba$h set up) that you can make a weekend out of.... But this is coming from someone who doesn't have kids and counts these trips as vacation days! I guess you could do an average on something like that and it would the idea set up, IMO. |

| I would be looking at the cost of entries, what was being taken off, figure out for myself what ballpark payout would be, then decide.
I would also factor in the mileage to get there, the closer one may not have as much added, but is taking out less, and entry fees are lower and 5d format, I would probably go to this one.
I would look at my horse if my horse is prone to knocking one in three, then if will probably stay away from the average runs.
If I had a top 1d horse then I would go to the one with highest payout.
I would also look at how my horse performs in each arena, as all horses have their favorite. I had one horse that still holds the fastest time on regulation in one arena, but at another arena on regulation would be a 2/3d horse, he didn't like shifty ground.
There are many more variables that I look at other then the split, that generally is the last as if I am on colts and they are not running top of 1d it is like the lottery, it may be your day, but may not be |

Location: Kansas | I have mixed feelings about 5Ds. Unless you get a ton of entries, they do spread the money out and no one wins as much, but more people win something. I do know that with a 1D horse, I'd rather go to a 4D because the checks will be bigger, but I like having payout at the 2 seconds off spot for a horse that's just getting started. In general, 5Ds don't pay well enough in Kansas so pretty much everything here is a 4D. |

Location: would like to be where it does not snow | If I'm driving any distance I prefer to run 2 or 3 times with an average. I agree with other posts depends on the entries and added money, 4D or 5D. Not everyone has a 1D horse. It is nice to get a little pay back even in the 5D if your hauling young horses. A lot of factors to look at.

I've been to ALOT of barrel races. And I have inadvertently discovered that I prefer the barrel races that have three seperate races. I don't prefer an average either. Because 9 times out of 10 I only run two of the three days because of prior work commitments.
Given the choice, I HATE anything with a finals. I think an average is a great idea, because it can pay off really well for someone with a super consistent horse that doesn't necessarily place to make a finals.
I don't care fo the 5D splits because it's less money to each D, but I think I'm the minority there. I would rather see barrel races pay deeper then pay more divisions. |
