Location: Northwest bound | HI,
Can anyone tell me about their horse with cushing's? When did it start, do you have them on the prescend (sp), how old is the horse, the changes you've noticed over the years, etc? Would you purchase a horse with cushing's? And possibly anything I maybe missing question wise?

Location: Winging It in KY | Well, my husband has one. He is 29 YO and we have had him since he was 5 YO. He seemed to acquire Cushings in his later years, 20's. He is not on any medication but we keep him on some herbs that help control it a bit. We have tried several different things that did not work. In the middle of winter, he is a wooly mammoth! The best way we deal with it is clipping him. He gets clipped early spring when the weather breaks and he then wears a blanket. Gets clipped again in the summer. We have changed his diet and he gets beet pulp added to his feed to help with his insulin and blood glucose levels. He seems to get along fine. I'm sure that some horses may have it in varying degrees and are more manageable. We keep a close eye on his feet for any changes that he may have. Would I buy one with it? No, not if I knew that they had it. |

The best horse I have ever owned was diagnosed with Cushings in her mid 20's. I live in the middle of Texas and it was down right miserable for her. She hated the clippers but I was afraid she was going to have a heat stroke if we didn't keep all that hair in check. I also added the soaked beet pulp to her feed. The first few years were pretty managable but it got worse each year. I finally had to make the call to put her down and it broke my heart.
I can deal with many of the maintenance issues that come with some horses but if I didn't already own the horse I definatley would say cushings would be a deal breaker for me. |

| Our 18 year old pony is suspected of having cushings. Her weight is ideal, but she has fat deposits on her shoulders, rib cage area, and her tail head. I talked to my vet Saturday and he said the prescription meds are a waste of money, he has never been happy with the results. He told me in the Spring to give her a human supplement (can't remember the name) to help her shed out. She was hard to shed out this spring but she did do it on her own. |

Location: Got Lobsta? | I have a 30 y/o qh who was dx when he was 18. He didn't shed out and drank tons of water but always had good weight and energy. However when he turned 29 my new vet thought it be great to put him on Perolide. After awhile I noticed he was losing weight and refusing his feed. They switched him to Presend and it didn't get better. I read the reviews on Smart Pak and it said how lots of horses lose their appetite on it. My horse lost so much weight I thought I would have to put him down in the fall. We took him off of the meds, added Smartpak Pituitary Senior to his grain which is Nutrean Special Care and he's made a huge come back! Just watch your horses's weight carefully if going on meds. |

| My old man has it, he is 29 this year. Was diagnosed with it when he was 25 and it got bad FAST. Really thought I was going to loose him one summer, his was so bad he got a touch of founder. He is on pergolide oral gel every day. It works GREAT! he does not keep a long shaggy coat anymore, eat and drinks great. So thankful to still have him around.
Shaggy coat pic was when he was first diagnosed (it got MUCH worse than that)
Now he is slick and happy.

Location: Driving, Grooming, or Saddling for a Kid! | We put my daugthers horse on prascend. Here are the results. I will say that he died of a stroke less than a year after being on the medicine. I have no idea if it had anything to do with the prascend. He was 18 years old.

Location: Opelousas, LA | I have about a month and a half of Smart Pituitary Senior in smartpaks that I will send to someone if they want to try it. We had to put our old guy down last week and the smartpaks had shipped the day before, I do think they helped him more than anything else we tried but in the end it wasn't enough.
