| I know I'm an idoit for not having a horse vetted before bought.. but here i am, $1500 later typing this. turns out my gelding i just bought a month ago was lame in the front end and needed hock injections in both joints. (injections in his coffin joint)
.. what I'm about to ask makes me feel like a complete dumbas*!
would you buy a horse knowing he had all that done?
i don't plan on keeping him forever. he runs 1d. he's not some super show 1d horse but at normal shows he's in the top 5 always.
thats with up too 300 running. he's a nice gelding. just has this maintenance now. he would be priced according to his faults etc. but i was just wondering if they're people out there that still buy these types of horses.
i don't plan to sell him anytime soon, as he fits me perfectly but i didn't plan on keep him forever either.
PLEASE no rude comments.. I've had an ear full from my vet for 4 hours today. i understand i messed up. |

Location: White Mountains of AZ | Maybe not the smartest choice, but also shame on the sellers who did not tell you any of this! If you can afford his maintenance, and he fits with you, I'd be happy that you did buy him. If you would've known that he needed all this would you have bought him? If you love him, and he works great for you, I wouldn't be too hard on myself :) |

| I think if the horse was priced right I would. As long as the matinence keeps him sound. And if you like him and he fits you that's great. Don't beat yourself up over it. Enjoy the horse |

Did he need hock or coffin join injections or both? $1500 for both type injections still seems very high to me... |

| Yes 1500 for everything, which included lameness exam, "farm call", wrapping etc. it was not cheap but i also made sure i had one of the best vets out to do his injections as i didn't want anything to go wrong. |

Location: Texas | It happens. I don't always pre purchase my horses and most of the time there's not a problem, but some of the times there is. On the cheap ones where it's not a big deal, I don't always vet check. Kind of like, don't look a gift horse in the mouth. But the expensive horses we do vet check because that money didn't come easy and that horse would be hard to replace.
That being said, it doesn't sound like anything super devastating. The kicker will be- how long will the injections last? If your horse is good for a year or more on those injections, then I wouldn't be concerned at all as a potential buyer. Even if they needed hock injections every 6 months I wouldn't freak out over it. Coffins, I would start to hesitate. Anything more frequent than every 6 months I would start feeling iffy about as a potential buyer. |

Location: Canada | If he runs in the top 5 of 300 riders then no it wouldn't turn me away. I expect that my 1D horse requires some maintenance so as a potential buyer that wouldn't bother me.

Location: Central Montana | I bought a reiner last fall that passed a vet check, I had the xrays sent to one of my local vets and the vet passed him........then he went lame lame lame this spring.......he has navicular........so, it happens, even when you think you've done everything right........I've come to find the former owner knew it too.......what goes around comes around. |

But sellers should have disclosed this.. for the sake of the horse anyway... and yes vet check ... always..so you know if you can afford the care.

| Depending on what kind of maintenance and how frequently it's needed, and if the horse should remain sound for competition, I would not be concerned about buying a 1D horse that needs injections. And honestly, I'd be a little cautious about a horse of that caliber that hasn't been maintained.
That being said, I know that some people are against injections or don't understand the benefits/necessity of them. For example, I had a 6 year old gelding that was acting a little sore. Had him flexed, x-rayed, and his hocks were injected. My vet felt like this was not something that would need to be done routinely. I provided this information to all interested buyers, and I know that for several it was a deal breaker. |

| Every horse needs maintenance.....well, any ones that are on top of their game. It comes with the territory, so no worries.....injections are a routine, common thing. If he fits you and runs where you say in the pack, it's a yes from me. Good luck!
ETA.....besides who is anyone to judge you? I mean, it's your money. Go enjoy that horse!

Location: MD | I feel like most horses need some sort of maintenance. As long as it's disclosed at the time of the sale that wouldn't stop me from buying. Unless he's needing them too frequently in my vets opinion. |
