Question re: Bute and Hooves

I have had horses all my life and had never heard that Bute will not work on a hoof injury. In this case, the mare was hot nailed in 2 holes. We had her on Previcox for 10 days with no relief. It has been a month now, and we did run her last Saturday. I gave her 1/2 gram of Bute on Thurs, Fri and before we ran her on Saturday. We just got her over bout with Ulcers and I am aware the Bute can be hard on her but, we do make sure she has a little food in her stomach when we gave it to her.

You get what you give

So what exactly is your question?
Did the farrier come out and fix the hot nails?
I would think you would have to give more than 1/2g of bute to see any effect. If you are concerned about giving NSAIDs and ulcers, you can always give ulcergard concurrently with the bute.

Was just afraid to give the mare any more than 1/2 gram at a time, due to her just getting cleared of Ulcers. Over the three days leading up to her run, she did get 1 1/2 grams. Thank you for the suggestion to give her the Ulcergard along with the Bute.
We had just put her shoe back on her the Monday before the Saturday we ran her. She was feeling good when we worked her on Wed. after, just used the bute as a buffer.
I was asking because a long time friend told me today that Bute would not have any effect the mare if she was still sore from the hot nail or a hoof injury. I'd never heard that and was just wondering if anyone else had.
I was reluctant to even Bute her because in June, we were having a possible lameness issue. The Vet suggested we bute
(1 gram
) her for three days before running her, just to see if she was sore. She coliced after the 1st gram. Took her and had her scoped, testing 9 on a scale of 1 to 10 for Ulcers. Went through 28 days of Ulcergard and now tests Ulcer free. We now feed her the Neigh Lox per the Vet's instructions.

Vet has always told me:
Bute for feet
Banamine for bellies and muscle
Fibrocoxib for joint, arthritis ect
Make sure he always has something to
Munch on to help buffer his stomach from the medication
a few days of treatment won't cause ulcers
It's longterm, heavy treatment that will., as well as,The possibility of bute irritating ulcers already exsisting ,
I would go for the ulcer guard too.
