My gelding has suddenly abscessed on his lower anterior teeth. (Lower fronts.) He had a dental about a month ago. When I fed yesterday morning he STUNK!! After further inspection.. His mouth smelled like death. I have a call in to my dentist, and to the vet but I have not heard back from either. Looking at him, three teeth seem to be affected. He has gum boils on two that have ruptured, with thick yellow drainage, and swelling in the gum tissue around the third. I've been flushing with chlorhexidine rinse to clean them out, because that's what we do at work. (As a human dental professional.) However this is my first horse toothache. He was eating great until this morning. He didn't finish his breakfast, but was interested in grazing.. Although he didn't do very well. I did give him some bute, as I figured he was probably pretty uncomfortable. He has minimal swelling right behind his chin, and his lower lip is slightly swollen. Advice? Should I be doing anything else?

Sounds like your horse was done with power tools and they either got into the gumline or they took too much tooth off. I would call your vet so he can give you some antibiotics if he feels they are needed.

Do you have any Vetericyn? If so put some in a syringe and apply to his gums a few times a day. A horse's mouth will heal pretty quickly.

He was done with power tools, and they did a lot of grinding. I don't have any vetericyn, but I can get some. I had the chlorhexidine on hand.. Perks of the real job! Still have not heard back from my vet OR the dentist. The vets answering service has taken three messages for me. Guess it's not as much of an emergency as I think it is. Poor fella feels awful though!

It sounds what you are doing is good and is probably stronger then Vetericyn but the Vetericyn has never let me down. Sorry both of you are going through this as it is so un-necessary.

Sounds like they got into the pulp chamber by taking too much off.

Chlorhexidine is the recommended for any dental issue but he seriously needs to be on antibiotics and I would get an xray asap so that you know what extent you are dealing with.

Thanks y'all! My vet is putting him on two weeks worth of SMZ. I am to continue to flush with the chlorhexidine and if I'm not seeing any progress within a few days to bring him in. We are already showing some progress.. He doesn't smell as bad! [=

If you can get it, Uniprim is alot easier. It seems to do better than plain SMZ. It has a broader spectrum according to the vets I work with. Plus you can give it once a day.
Good luck!!
