My vet just diagnosed my mare with pigeon fever. It started with sores on her legs and she is now draining from her belly and it looks like her chest will develop an abscess too. She's currently with the trainer and is actually in a pen where she doesn't have any contact with other horses. The vet said they are seeing a lot of cases (probably due to the drought). I talked with the vet, but what should I expect and how long of recovery time am I looking at? I'm a worry wart, so I'm glad that I don't have to be there every day taking care of her, my trainer is doing it all.

When my stud got it a few years back, he had one on his chest, it took nearly two months for it to go away.  But I know people that had others that didn't take that long.

All I know is it is highly contagious. Someone I know had a mare with pigeon fever and brought her to a barrel because they didn't want to leave her home alone. They parked next to me and I didn't know the situation till after the fact. I was very upset someone would put other peoples horses at risk. My horses are on Animal Element Detox and Immune but I bumped them all up to the loading doses for 3 weeks just to be safe.

I am not disputing what you said but when my stud had it I had other horses and not another one got it.  I just knew they would all end up with it.

Mine had it and was around other horses.  We didn't know what it was, so isolation was out of the question. One mare was in close contact with the sick horse throughout the illness.  It didn't spread to any other horses.  Just treat the pain and lance the abcesses that don't readily erupt.  The pain is reduced after erruption.  NO antibiotics because it can internalize the abcesses and make it life threatening.

I have 4 horses that are in pens of their own every night turned out during the day, one of my horses come down with Pigeon fever, I was so worried all the others would get it, but nope just Slick. I took him to vet to get it lanced and get it to drain and no body else ever got it, thank goodness.
