Location: Eastern OH but my heart is in WV | A eight year old, OTTB that has a chipped front knee? Had an unexpected opportunity fall in my lap and just not sure whether to take a chance on it. The story on the horse is he was raced six times, got injured and has been retired for a year. I have watched videos of the horse moving and he appears to be traveling well now. They are more interested in rehoming and I can pick him up really cheap (even well under my current budget which is hard to do). They keep saying how nice his personality is and the people who ride him, fall in love with him. I am just looking for a trail horse and maybe something my daughter can play around on at fun shows. I have never dealt with chips before and don't know what to really expect.? I just really want a nice quiet horse to enjoy out on the trails again but things can never be that simple..... |

Location: Montana | I had a 2 yr old filly off the track that then got kicked in the knee resulting in a chip in the front of the knee. After x-rays the vets said she would only be a brood are if the chip moved. After a year off she made a state champion barrel and pole horse for many years. She also gave us wonderful foals and died at the age of 28 sound and happy |

Location: Cap'n Joan Rotgut.....alberta | just keep in mind if that chip moves or starts to bother him you will have to get it removed or retire him....i would also have a 2nd opinion on the x-rays

This ^^^ but if he is a really nice trail horse, and just something your daughter can ride around on for under your budget, not bad. If you were hoping to to barrels or something, I'd rethink it. But just for something easy... |

Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | I would have the knee x-rayed to see how big of a chip he has and if it needs to be removed, if you like the horse I would just get it removed and be done with it. |

| Chip removal surgery doesn't have the greatest success rate after the age of 3 or so. They just don't heal right for some reason and they tend to have complicatione such as severe arthritis. |

Location: Eastern OH but my heart is in WV | It sounds like this "almost" free horse could end up costing me a lot more in the end. I am not looking to get back into running barrels but I would like to have something my daughter could play around with at smaller shows, so she don't have to run her good horse.
I would have to ask a lot more questions to find out what type of medical care the horse has received. It was just one of those things that some one-knows some one.... and gave me the number and picture to check him out.
My biggest problem is I KNOW what I want in a horse but my "standard" of horse is MUCH more then what I have to spend right now. LOL!!!!!!!! |

| I did get a free ottb with a chipped sesmoid bone. The vet at the track performed the removal for free as he really liked this gelding and was being put down otherwise. The gelding didn't have any issues that that long term. The vet also said he wouldn't necessarily have needed to removed it is just smarter do it doesn't effect the joint.
I don't know how cheap you are getting him but you can pick up an ottb for a few hundred if not free. Is he broke aside from track broke?
If it were something I were looking for, I likely would take a chance on them but that's my personality and thus far my gut has been right one which horses deserve that "risk." Im sure one day ill get burned  |

My gut has served me well also.. I have bought many a horse at the cheapo auction houses that have been my favorites... I've been screwed over by the backyard seller more than once... I remember one sale a friend and I went to, a nice looking coming 2 paint stud came in the pen. We looked at each other and said "where was he hiding?" She bought him without getting close up and personal and her grandchildren still walk around on him.. He was one of those "born broke" type horses |
