Subject: Regu-Mate Question..

500100252525
I am considering placing my mare on Regu-mate to hopefully help with her major attitude problem when in heat.

The directions say to give 1ml per 110lbs of the horse 1x a day for 15 days.

My question is, after the 15 days will she be in heat?
Is this not to be used year round to keep her out of heat?

I would be new to this so any suggestions are appreciated!

Thank you!!

I always gave my mares 10cc's a day, every day, to keep them from coming into heat.

Regumate is used primarily to regulate/manipulate heat for breeding purposes.  The directions you quoted are for that. Your use of it for a performance enhancer is off label.  You should ask your vet how to use it for that.

Anything to keep them from coming into heat is not recommended, per my team of vets.  This is a natural bodily function and as with everything, with every action is a reaction.  Many vets think we mess with mother nature too much.  I agree.

You can also give it as in injectable once a month instead of having to deal with the messy daily dosing.  Your vet should be able to come up with it, here's a link if they can't:

eta: Altrenogest is the generic name for Regu-Mate.

Which is why when choosing a vet, it is important to make sure they are "performance horse" vets, not just a farm vet.  There are lots of great mares who wouldn't be great if you couldn't supress their heat cycles.  If you want a broodmare, have a broodmare, if you want a money winning barrel mare, supress the heat cycles- if they are too distracting for her.

Yes, it will bring her into heat when you quit giving it.

No sure, I only used it for breeding purposes at the beginning of her pregancy. Didn't realize it had other qualities and thought it wasn't suppposed to be used year round.

YES!!! Or you will have uterine cramps like you won't believe. If you are pregnant, get someone else to handle it too.
