It has to do with a condition known as HYPP..

All HYPP positive horses trace back to a famous stallion, Impressive. He was the first horse to have this disease. However, not all of his decedents have the disease. He was very very widely bred before the disease was understood.

HYPP n/n- horse does not have the disease or carry it at all
HYPP n/h- horse has the disease, but might not show symptoms OR it might get the disease and die from it
HYPP h/h- VERY bad! The horse has the disease and will likely die from it.

Komet is correct, but now that they do panel testing, if a horse is tested for say PSSM or MH or HERDA, they test comes back H/H, N/H, or N/N. N/N is completely negative, does not have and cannot pass on that trait/disease.
