I don't know anything about hackamores. But I'm kinda contemplating getting one for one of my horses. She's had quite a bit of time off due to injury, but right before that I had her in a Sherry Cervi short shank twisted dogbone. She would throw her head around and react very badly to the bit every time I so much as touched the reins (and I have GREAT hands). So I put her in a full cheek snaffle as it was the only other bit I had at the time. Her head shaking stopped but she just didn't even feel the bit and I could hardly stop her. She picked up the head shaking on and off even with that bit then too. She was all up to date with her teeth so that wasn't the issue. So now I'm going to slowly start getting her back into work again. IF she starts up with the head shaking again, I'm considering just trying a hackamore to see if she'd be happier in it. But where do I even start? She's a strong horse, and has been taught barrels but not really to soften, flex, and slow down (I haven't had much of a chance to ride her since I bought her).

Have you done chiro work. My horse often has his jaw out of place and gets really bad when its out. Hes a goof ball, hates shank bits with a passion, recently ive been trying different bits, he doesn't like when the shank has a slide to it. I really like the feel of chain bits, but without the slide there really is nothing to a chain bit. I put a Petska bit on him, i absolutely love it on him. Hes comfortable in it, i have full control. Ive tried a hackamore on him, hes just too strong.

that's the bit, no adjusting, no pinch. Just a plane roping bit.

I did have her chiro'd and massaged. I'm not sure what she'll do now, with so much time off, she may be ok with a bit. I have a couple more now that I can try. I don't want to spend a whole lot expiramenting with her because I'm strongly considering selling her.
Sidenote-that bit is really pretty.

Does she maybe prefer a ported bit?  Mine hates anything laying across his tongue.

a hack I really like is the JD hack from L&W bits.

I am not a hackamore guru but I have used the beetle hack and s hack but both are fairly light. I don't know that you'd get the control you desire. Have you considered bringing her back to the basics a bit and see if that helps? Even my gelding needs some time on the longlines once in awhile to refresh.

That's step one. She's had almost 2 years off so I'm starting slow with lunging her then slowly starting her under saddle again.
