I used the classic equine type that Sherry Cervi uses. Can you use shims on a saddle that is too narrow or only on one that is too large? In my head it only makes sense on a wider saddle but figured I'd ask anyways.

If you don't like the Classic Equine shims use a hand towel or a piece of sheepskin.

I'll check those out. I can't think of why you would shim a saddle that is too small.

Why would you shim a too small saddle?  If your shoes are too small do you wear 2 pair of socks?

It looks to me like Sherry just uses sheepskin.  I haven't the foggiest on where to find it either. LOL

Cerci uses sheep skin and closed cell foam. I way he'd her video on saddle fitting yesterday. I might be able to get sheepskin from my local saddle man. just wondering about how long it would hold up compared to the foam.

You could get synthetic sheepskin at a fabric store.  Hobby Lobby if you have those near you.

ive never understood the reason for her shimming her saddles... they should fit... since they are her line? right? lol... and in know they say your horse will get bigger but shes ridden in those saddles for long enough that what was going to come back would have... just sayin

I made my own out of wool.

24 inches by 12 inches used wool rovings and wove it through a guinea sack just like the old wool saddle pads.

It works perfect, I won't go back to the classic equine

I don't shim any more.  I have a gelding that had some atrophy behind the shoulders.  My Cactus CJ was a little wide but with using the CE shims and lots of long trotting he filled out without having to switch saddles.  Now the shims take up space in my trailer.

I'm too tired to explain it but if you will google her saddle fitting video she tells you why she shims.

Stingray hasn't worn the same saddle all the way through, as she filled in to one saddle she moved up to another size.

If you are really interested in understanding the idea - Brian and Tracy at Martin are great to talk too and work with.

Edited to add to the OP: I like the tapered Classic equine shims, it allows me to really be picky with adjustment haha. I also cut them in half.

I have the CE foam shims and like them. I also use no bow wraps folded the way I need them sometimes
