Location: The best kept secret in TX | Just curious on prices of a pony over 33 inches tall in N.Texas. Thinking about getting one since my baby donkey I have won't be strong or developed enough for a child to ride for about 3 more years.
Anyone know what the going rate is for a green broke, or young pony? How about a dead head kid pony?
I keep looking on Facebook and the prices are varied from $150-1500.... I just don't want to overpay for something that doesn't know much. I want a green broke pony we can finish our own way but everyone wants too much for them in my opinion.
My question is: What is the pony market like? Green broke prices? Dead broke prices?

Location: Texas | We looked at a bunch before we found the perfect pony for us. at 36 inches and jet black with a long mane and tail gelding. 10 yrs old. Broke to ride but not fancy. Not naughty. He acts like a big horse. We spent 500. My daughters first "unassisted "run" was on him with people yelling strange arena and announcers He was a SAINT. My daughter was sooo serious and that pony did his job perfectly. My kids play with him everyday (4 and 5) and I never have to worry. His only con however he did end up needing stifle surgery a few months after we bought him which has given him no issue since I have a list of people that want him when my kids out grow him.
ETA good ponies are out there but be ready to sort through foundered no catching trash to find it. That's what we ran into the most or they were not safe for kids to handle

Location: Phoenix | I saw a dead broke pony for $2k.
I think for under $600 you'll be getting a more green pony. Higher than that and they'll be more broke. |

Location: Northern CO | My husband and I have been looking all fall and just found one that fit our budget and almost all of our requirements. He is a little guy (smaller than waist high), broke to ride and drive but nothing super fancy, and had been hauled quite a bit. His only down fall for us was his age as he is only 5. So far he has been great, very gentle on the ground, very correct build and came to us in excellent health. We paid $500 for him and felt we got a great deal on him. Most of the little guys we called on and looked at were around $1000 sometimes a little more. For a green broke type I wouldn't spend over $500. Good luck in your search. |

| We bought one over the summer for my niece. He is a dead broke little guy with a incredible handle we paid $2500 for him and he is worth every penny ! |

| Up in our area, we have a lot of young green broke ponies for $200-$400 I would say is common. Those are for the medium sized to larger ponies (11h-13h). The smaller guys go for $50 to $200.
There are some wicked ponies up here that sell for $5-6k. I've seen the dead broke, maybe not performance ponies that usually sell around $1000-$2500 depending on age and other variables. |

Location: Texas | I paid $300.00 for a little gelding for my grandson. Tattoo is 49" tall and just a sweetheart. We are just doing leadline right now, as Bryce is only 2 years old. A 16 yr old girl that I help has been riding him and doing a great job with him on teaching him the patterns. Just got his teeth floated so I know there will be a great change in him.

| We bought a 16 year old pony September 2013 for my daughter's birthday. She is about 45" tall and SAFE on the ground. Her only quirks are that when you cinch her up she will bite, and when my little nieces or sisters ride her she kicks out when kicked, but then goes on. She has to be in a lot by herself, as she has foundered in the past, but was maintained and has never took a lame step since we have had her. She does have to be trimmed every 4ish weeks, but my hubby is my farrier so not a biggie!
When I am doing chores or cleaning the barn, mowing the yard etc. my daughter goes in with her and hugs on her, and pets her etc. and I know she is safe.
We owned her about 11 years ago, and had been trying to buy her back since! We paid $600. They were asking $1000 but since we owned her before they sold her to us for $600. Who we bought her from was her 2nd owner since us. |

Location: The best kept secret in TX | I was looking at a 36" shetland for 300. He is said to be a little onery but once he gets going they said he is fine. He's an hour from me so i'm not sure if I should look at him for not. Is 36" too small already for a 5 year old? He's the only one I've found that isn't 1,000-1500 around here. Everyone else thinks their 2 year old halter broke pony hung the moon... LOL |
