Equine ICSI
Making the post season

Has anybody used this to get a foal from a mare that cannot conceive or carry a foal herself? If so - pros/cons? I have been reading about it and am intrigued since I have a mare that has less than a 25% chance of conceiving a foal through traditional methods due to cysts. Would just like to hear if anyone has real-life experience with it... :

I haven't done it but I've had a few lectures on it in vet school so far.
I was quoted about $4000-5000 for the ICSI and then $4000-5000 for the ET that followed so about $8000-10,000 in vet costs. There's a vet in CA that I think does it for $8000.
There are other methods that aren't used much anymore but I think Colorado State still uses it, where they take the oocyte out of the donor mare, take an oocyte out of a recip mare, implant the oocyte into the recip mare in the oviduct and then AI the recip mare. So you are pretty much AIing the recip but you switched the eggs so the donor egg gets fertilized in the recip. But when we learned about it the prof said we don't do that method as much anymore. I know for TAMU it was because they don't have a big enough herd of mares.

The vet in CA that does it would be my vet. Dr. Rick Beck 951-929-4533. Winners Citcle Equine Clinic and Infoal Inc. Great guy to talk to!

I have several friends that have used this method quite a bit. I had a mare over at Dr. Beck's earlier this year to do ICSI and it was not successful for her. I have watched him do aispirations through the flank and vaginally...very interesting. Expect to pay about $10,000 for the procedure. If you have a mare that is worth the cost, then it's great.
