Expert Posts: 2685	does anyone use those big "protein tubs" they sell at places like TSC for their broodmares in the pasture? The ranch I bought my first horse from used them. They had 6-10 horses on a section of land with several ponds and several protein tubs (equine tubs) and that's all those horses got. They had babies yearly that didn't seem to have any "issues" but its not like I saw a whole lot either. I guess I'm wondering if its a useful investment. Its $50? for a 200# tub. I thought about getting a smaller one that I found on the shelf for $30 but it was only 40#.

So, no! Not worth it for any of the others I've tried! They lick this tub like a mineral block, making it last much longer.

Expert Posts: 1695 Location: Willows, CA	Renew Gold has had a 125 pound tub in testing for two years at the Twisselman Ranch in California. It really takes time to get the consumption rate just right on a product like this. This can be a good way to support brood mares and horses that are turned out in a group. Also, this can be good support for turned out yearlings or two year olds that can use a head start being fitted for yearling sales or being started. In our trials they were moved to Renew Gold once they were brought in from turn out. This has worked well for horses in this management situation.
