Bone Chip Removal

I recently aquired a finished patterened mare that had a chip removed in the dorsal side of her front right. Apprently the last owner let the issue go on for awhile before doing the surgery. I was just wondering if anyone has any experience with this, results after the surgery, heal time and any other tidbits I may need to know.

I bought an OTT 6 months ago and when I did the pre-purchase vet exam I had xrays done and they found a chip in the knee. I went ahead and purchased the gelding, and had the chip removed, or as much of it as possible. When they did the surgery the vet said it looked like they had tried to remove it before, so he had to clean up a lot of scar tissue, other then that he said the horse should have no problems running barrels. it took 8 weeks to heal and I started legging him up and sent him to the trainer. The only thing we both noticed is that there is a small pocket of fluid that builds up, but doesn't seem to bother him and the vet said he may have that forever, but shouldn't effect him. So far so good. I went ahead and bought the BOT knee boots to use on him, but I don't do anything else.

My vet said the same thing about the fluid build up. Had both knees done, luckily they hadn't caused any damage inside the knee.

Because I worry about everything! LOL! I've just never delt with a chip so I wanted to get all the info I could before I start legging her back up. There is a knot there in the 'ankle' area but I have not seen any lameness. Ive slow loped her around the pattern and she didnt snap the first barrel like she did the other 2 and thats the leg that had the chip. Shes a super nice little mare and I have high hopes. Thanks for sharing your stories!
