ROWLETT — Investigators are looking into the cause of a massive stable fire in Rowlett that killed as many as eight horses late Saturday night.
Many of the animals were seen running wild at Rowlett Stables at Rowlett and Miller Roads after was reported shortly after 10 p.m.
Word spread fast, and horse owners rushed to the location to see if their animals were okay. An attempt was made to lasso them, but some of the horses were just too spooked.
Rowlett Public Works employees took the smoldering barn down with a backhoe while firefighters attacked hot spots.
A devastating fire swept through Rowlett Stables late Saturday night. WFAA
Eric Zimmerman with the Rowlett Fire Department said the property owners were not home at the time of the fire. He confirmed that eight horses died out of 18 housed there. Ten horses were rescued.
The stable was destroyed, but no people were injured.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Zimmerman told News 8 that a witness reported hearing three loud "pops" at the time of the fire.
Any witnesses are urged to contact the Rowlett Fire Department to assist with its probe.
