Location: Montana | Hi, so it looks like my husband and I will be moving up to Montana. He will probably be coming up in Jan and he already has a place to stay. ( he is going to be driving in the oil fields) We were thinking of me staying in Helena where his Mom is and having her move in with me since she has health problems and his sister that she lives with has three young kids under five. But if she doesn't move in I would like to be closer to him. So tell me what I could find for places to rent where I could keep my two four legged children or board them? Are there many races on the east side? I know I will need to get shots and coggins? But what else do I need? Thanks a bunch! |

Location: MT | You will need to have your vet call the Montana Dept of Livestock for an import permit number when they do your health inspection on your horses. Also will need to get brand inspections done when you get here. The MT Dept of Livestock has a good website that lists a lot of information.
I just moved from the SW part of the state to Eastern MT so am not much help on what is available on this side of the state yet. There is a good website called bigskybarrels that lists quite a few events. Helena is a great town, one of my favorites! |

Location: Montana | You can check out Outback Barrel Association on FB. They have races around eastern Montana during the summer and this year have had a series in the fall and planning one this spring in Miles City. Welcome to Montana! |

Thanks for the info! We are living south of Miles City, good to know. |

Location: Montana | Thank you! This is a big change for me, I have never lived out of oregon let alone more than ten miles from my parents. I have always wanted to be in Montana, every time I have visited the state it felt like I was home. Even in the cold! |

Location: Montana | Well, I hope you love snow, as you will have a lot once moving to Montana. As far as barrel races go, I couldn't think of a more central location to the better barrel races. In the summer Helena has a nice little series with affordable entry fees, and you are about 90 miles or less in any direction to more added money barrel races. Sometimes a little more if you go to Billings or Dillon or something like that, but it is a pretty good place. I live about 90 miles from Helena, so I don't know many people in that area as far as places to keep a horse...only one really, but I would highly recommend that person. On the eastern end of the state, if you stay around Billings there are quite a few races around there, but it has been years since I have been to Billings so I don't know as much as probably should, ha-ha. My sister and brother live there and they seem to like it, but they aren't into horses.
Not sure about Oregon laws, but in Montana you need a brand inspection, Coggins and a health certificate are now required to cross state lines (Idaho is pretty strict about that). Can't think of much else, but if I do I'll post later! |

Snow is ten times better than our constant 9 months worth of monsoon like rain! |

Location: Back in MT BABY!!! | You should be able to find a rental for horses about anywhere you go in MT. I just moved from Helena and yes it was centrally located to a lot of races but the town itself was not for me...to political and real estate was to high. As far as the estern side of the state....they have the outback association as well as a handful of really high money races during the summer that I'm REALLY looking forward to this summer. Being in Helena I never went to them because they were to far. Billings has a lot of runs going on all year round. Another bonus on the eastern side of the state....no passes to pull. Depending on your husbands work schedule the commute to Helena is going to get old. It's an 8 to 10 hour drive depending on his location and weather. My boyfriend used to work 10 days on 4 days off...and 2 of the days off he spent driving back and forth and the 2 days he was home all he wanted to do was sleep because was always exhausted. Where in MT is your husband going to be working? |

| I am on the western side of the state in Hamilton but my husband is now working in Billings so we might end up over there as well. I like the Billings area plenty to do and there are several places to board horses and I have been checking out rentals and there are some out there that you can have horses/dogs ect. I know Helena has a good horse community and I know several ladies up there and would be happy to put you in touch. |
