Location: Choctaw, Oklahoma | How long after your break did you go back to riding? How bad was the break? I'm starting off 2015 with a broke right radius. Which sucks because I had hopes for running at some indoor races this winter. I had to have surgical repair. For now I'm dragging my lollipop in the dirt and kicking rocks counting down my 6 weeks. I got yelled at for loading and unloading feed bags today. ...

Location: Fort Collins, CO | I didn't need surgery so I'm not a good person to base it off it. the moment i got my hard cast on i threw my saddle on my horse (using a chair---one armed) and rode haha!
But after i got my hard cast off i had to be careful and do PT to get my range of motion back. THAT sucked!
listen to your doctors to an extent. you'll thank yourself when you're 60 and aren't hurting horribly because you weren't a good patient!

Location: Where I need to be | Fifteen years ago I shattered my wrist, so I have a metal plate in my wrist. It took about 3 months or so before I could ride again.

I crushed my left wrist June 2014. Surgery, screws, plate. I was riding a week after. I just couldn't saddle on my own. I did more than I should have but it healed fine. Pain meds were my friend.
ETA I had a soft cast for a week waiting on the plate they ordered to come in, then hard cast. I rode bareback the night I broke it lol. Being stubborn. Beyond that as long as I had help doing the must have 2 hands stuff then I did it :)

Location: Displaced Iowegian | Years ago, I hit the arena dirt (wrist first) when my steer undecorating horse took a hard left as I was reaching for the ribbon. I split my radius and Ulna in three places......they pinned them, put on a hard cast, and I ran barrels at a rodeo the next week-end. I did have to use a wrist brace AFTER they took the cast off. I did have help saddling, etc........The worst problem I had was driving. It was my right wrist and we had a stick shift.

| I had a super bad break, I shattered my radius, broke my scaphoid and also chipped my ulna on my right wrist. They straightened it by hand that night and then I had surgery the next morning and got a plate and 9 screws I believe. I never had a hard cast, just a half cast, hard shell on bottom, soft on top, then switched out to a removable half cast, then eventually a brace. I was riding 4 days later, I would have started sooner but she was due for a 4 day break. In fact, no one was around so I went outside and managed to brush, saddle, bridle and pick all four feet on my horse with just my left hand and my mouth lol. I wasn't able to use my right hand to ride, had to keep it horizontal in front of my chest as the pressure hurt to have it hang down for the first couple weeks, and I wasn't allowed to use a sling either. But I rode my good broke barrel horse only, with one hand, just to keep her in shape so I could run later in the season. My first barrel run back was one month and 21 days after I broke it. I feel like had I NEEDED to, I could have ran her a week sooner, but it wasn't a big race so I skipped it and saved up for finals. Did I feel like I was 100%? No, looking back at videos, my wrist still didn't even bend backwards then, but I could grab the horn comfortably and hold the reins as well as had enough strength to pull as needed, although I could not grab my over and under very well as my wrist didn't rotate enough yet. I did feel totally safe and comfortable though, plus I had a wrist brace on (one with a thumbhole and velcro from Superstore). My next set of finals, a month later, so almost 3 months since breaking it, I felt a lot better, basically 100% riding wise, still used a brace though, but I was able to fully rotate to grab my over and under. It has now been a year and a half since breaking it, my wrist overall feels almost 100% in all aspects, but for sure feels 110% in all aspects of riding. I made runs all season without any form of brace and had zero issues, pain or mobility wise. I will note I used a back on track wrist brace from the moment I was able to, about 2 weeks after breaking it I think, and I will honestly say, my experience with a broken wrist was as close to painless as you could get with something being broken. Like it really was not all that bad, the worst part was the nausea from the anaesthetic. Was it the back on track? I don't know, but I can say, a lady I know who broke her wrist identical to me, same day (weird I know) had tons of pain and no back on track brace... So I would recommend getting one. Also, my doctor (who did not condone my riding, but turned a blind eye) told me that he has never seen a bone heal as quickly and as solidly as mine did, so my riding did not have any detriment to my healing. Had I fallen off, it may have been another story I guess, but it was a risk I was willing to take, and I made sure to stay off my colts and stick to my tried, true and trusted mare. So, if my story is anything like yours, you will be riding before you know it and racing too.

| I broke mine and had to have a bone graft placed into my wrist for it to be healed correctly. So I was also dealing with my hip healing from where they took the bone. But I was in a cast for 8 weeks and then I was placed in a brace after that. I started riding as soon as my cast came off and then rode in my brace for a good two months after that just for the just in case factor. Also don't be surprised how weak that wrist will be after you get the cast off and it will be sore as well. | |

Location: Choctaw, Oklahoma | Thanks guys!! Original break was friday, surgery was Tuesday and today is the first day I can wiggle my fingers without searing pain. The swelling is outrageous, but better! I'm wanting to hop on my older gelding but I'm thinking we all deserve the winter off. I was thinking I was being, a weenie. Looks like I'll be in a splint for the duration.
The back on track brace sounds like a great idea! Thank you!
