run n rate - 2015-01-03 11:17 AM Good to hear... That is the nice thing about working so close to home. I have the ability to run home at noon and check on everyone so having their "routine" down is easy. I do know if my little mare was ever found laying down ( though there is proof she must, dirt on her knees, etc , I have had her 8 years and other than rolling I've never seen her laying down) we'd be headed to the vet. The big mare and the gelding are sun worshippers. CC doesn't have time for that stuff, lol!!!

It's not quite home, but we're staying at Matt's place 15 minutes from the arena. We are here a lot of weekends so my horses have their own pen and it's about as close to home as we get. He hasn't been laying down today but the ground is softer because it's warmed up. Yesterday the ground was still pretty frozen and because we had mud last weekend, the pen was pretty nasty with frozen mud clumps. I think he piled a bunch of old hay (I feed it on the ground up here because I haven't had the guys make me a feeder yet) into a bed and just relaxed. He's not normally one to lay around but I do catch him sunbathing occasionally. All day he just seemed relaxed and happy so I let him be. Actually I went out and sat beside him for a while just to make sure he was really OK.  My thought after doing that was that his feet must be a touch sore from being on concrete at the rodeo, even though he's got Soft Rides. I started our warmup later last night, then kept him in the warmup barn until they were dragging to start barrels and found a spot on some dirt to stand as soon as I could in the main barn. Going to follow that same strategy tonight and hope it works again. :)

Well... did it work?? How'd you do??

That sucks. It was a good four days. Long days & short nights but a good time was had by all - well all except my father, who got freight trained by a pickup horse while judging the bareback riding Wednesday night. We're pretty sure he had a concussion, but he finished judging the rodeo with minimal help.....mainly Mom & Brett stood outside the fence and told him which line to write scores down on. They said his scoring was completely normal but he wasn't doing so well with knowing WHO he was scoring LOL.

To me, you're losing the most time at the second getting turned around to run to third. Each run, I see him dropping going into the second about a stride too early which is causing him to lose his hip just a hair which is then causing the extra step to get around and get going to the third. Watch your hand. You're having to work pretty hard to keep him stood up. If you can get him to stop dropping and stay up and running all the way to the rate point, he'll have his hip underneath and balanced and can fire that much faster when he gets around.

I tend to watch inside back legs in a turn. He's going in on the correct back lead but is switching leads to fire and take off to the third.

Just what I see. Ultimately you know your horse. He's a deceiving one that guy! I'd swear he's a full second off.

I see that too - pretty much all of it. I was thinking I could be coordinated enough to spank him once between 1st & 2nd but the run I carried the stick whip, I lost a stirrup and rode like a monkey holding on for dear life until after the 2nd barrel. He has always been deceiving with the long stride, and he's really smooth to ride so you don't feel like you're flying unless you ride him a lot and know what the smoking runs feel like.

Those girls that can whip between barrels have my undying admiration. I try it and make the monkey on the border collie look like Sherry Cervi.

It all varies of course but some horses will just drop harder the more you push them. If it were me, I'd spend my time schooling that shoulder to lift and come off my hand right this minute every single time regardless of where you are or what speed your going. An off the pattern reminder of a reverse arc then reverse arc at the rate point, etc. It usually doesn't take too much to remind them to stand up. Sometimes you have to really push with your inside leg to get that instant reaction and get them to stand up and move over.

Sometimes I can whip between barrels but if I can whip between 1st & 2nd on Chance we are not going fast enough! I do need to work him on staying straight one more stride at 2nd & 3rd as he has a tendency to get a little dull sometimes. It's something we work on a lot.
I changed from blunt end English spurs to my basic spurs with a rowel covered in vet wrap after the 2nd night because I didn't feel like he was coming into any barrel shaped quite how I wanted. (The spurs are why he waved his tail a couple times going to the third barrel on Day 3.....apparently I got a little aggressive with them which is why they're wrapped)

Yeah, that was him. I didn't see it either - I was putting Chance up from the grand entry and walked in about 5 seconds after it happened. When he didn't hop right back up, everyone who knows him knew he'd taken a heck of a shot. Roughies - even old retired ones - don't stay down for long unless they're really hurt.
He was not moving very well Thursday so they took him home and dug out his crutches from 31 1/2 years ago, bought some new parts for them and got him mobile again. This morning he was up before everyone else and doing the morning livestock chores with one crutch. lol.
