Don't Wanna Make This Awkward

I took a 3 week online history class over winter break.. The day before the class started my Grandpa died and we spent the next week and a half out of town for funeral and all the stuff that goes along with that. Then home for 4 days for christmas then we spent the last week in NYC for new years. We are usually required to take 2 tests proctored by an administrator at the school, but for the 3 week only 1 test had to. I live 3 hours from the school which is why I took online because they kick us out of the dorm for break. Well today is the last day of the class and the final is technically due which is what im suppose to take on campus. I emailed the teacher and asked if I could take it this week when the testing center on campus opens up since I've been out of town pretty much the whole course. The teacher has been quick to reply to everything else, but it's been a week now and no reply. Of course maybe she didn't see it or forgot to reply but thats really her only job besides grading since she already had all the material set up. I'm not mad at all and I don't want ther to think that, I would just like to get an answer from her. There's all kinds of things that could have happened, do I just email again and pretend like I haven't already sent her an email about this? I also have to bring up that she graded 2 of my quizzes wrong because when I went back and looked 2 questions on each quiz are marked wrong and the answer she put as the correct one don't match the notes where as my answers do. Plus it's history its either right or wrong you can't change it. I just don't want her to think I'm trying to be pushy or a smart a$$ if I ask to fix the quizzes, and did it seem like to much to ask to take the final on Monday on campus? Should I go ahead and take the online version of the final at home? Sorry if this seems rediculous to be asking, its my first semester of college and im trying to figure out all the do's and don'ts

I may have misunderstood but it seems like you were supposed to be on campus once during the break to take a test and you didn't so you emailed the Administrator and asked to take it when you return to campus with finals being due today. Is that correct?

First off I'm sorry to hear about your Grandpa it's hard to lose someone. I can understand the need to be with family and that that comes first. However, after the being busy with Christmas and going to NYC part is not your teachers problem. You signed up for a course that was only three weeks and at the last minute you're asking for special arrangements. She may not have gotten your email or she may have already written you off. Hopefully it's the first one.

I'm not trying to be harsh but I suggest you take the final at home and get that submitted so it's on time so you don't fail. You don't have prior permission to delay taking it so I'd get it done today. I'm not sure how lenient your school is but when I went to University if you didn't hand in assignments on time, or without prior written arrangements, you were out of luck and you'd fail. Once the final is submitted send her a polite email asking for a meeting then bring your tests and your notes and nicely ask her if she's mind reviewing your results. They're human and can make mistakes too.

My suggestion is get that test done today and good luck with it.

So in the future, ALWAYS let your profs know when you have a death in the family or an emergency. ALWAYS let them know ASAP so they are in the loop and arrangements can be made ahead of time in cases like this.

Also, there's nothing wrong about politely asking a professor to look at a quiz or test question and ask why you got it wrong or that you think you got it right. As long as you are polite, and not accusing them of doing you wrong, 99% of the time they will also politely explain why you got it wrong, or fix their mistake and give you points. Happens all the time.

Also, I would have already emailed her back, and you should have a syllabus for the class with her office number or even her cell phone, I would have already called those as well.

At this point you may be SOL but I would still try and contact your prof again.

I would send another Email stating you had sent her one already and tell her how she is always quick with a response. Make it seem as if YOU maybe sent it to the wrong address.. This puts the blame on you and not the teacher.. I would include most of the first email or a copy of it.

I think you need to adhere to their schedule. Get the test done. When you get back on campus meet with the teacher and politely ask why you got the questions incorrect rather than why the teacher marked them wrong. A courteous, positive attitude will get you a lot further.

I also suggest that you do not wait until the last day of finals to have the quizzes re-graded. Be prompt. ASAP after having the quizzes graded, to bring the grading questions/errors to the prof's attention. From a teacher perspective (which is what you asked for), I would be thinking "gee, she should have brought this to me when I had TIME to look at it/change grades, etc. It is the last day & you want me to help you? I am busy busy busy & have a deadline, too late!" You may not realize it, but your online professor has 100's of tests to grade & final grades to submit in a very short window of time.

I am sorry for your loss. This may be lesson learned, and if it is, just know that you will do better next time when life doesn't get in the way. Lots of people fail a class or two, and go on to be successful. Keep it in perspective. Good luck.
