Is this a good and fair organization to donate to? The commercials break my heart.I would like to donate if funds are handled properly.

I give to local shelters. The big organizations have huge expenses and I think with the ASPCA about 60 some percent actually goes to the animals.

I volunteer at my local shelter and I know that the SPCA doesn't give us any funding to help the animals in our area.  Our biggest donors are people living near us who care about the animals and want to help.  They know they can donate and have the money actually spent on the animals.  No need to trust in a national organization to trickle money down.

If you are worried that your money might not be spent on the animals, call your local shelter and ask them what supplies they need.  We always need things like towels, blankets, paper towels and bleach to help us.  We have a brand-new facility and need those things.  We have people who are kind enough to bring those supplies and even others like cat litter and stuff that are compatible with the kind we use.  Call and ask -- any shelter would be thrilled to tell you how you can use your money in that manner if you like.

that commercial is meant to bleed your heart... i turn the channel.  They could save so many animals for the amount of money they spend on advertising that it turns my stomach.
I put it in the same plain as political election moneys..... what a waste.

I recommend everyone go look at the ASPCA's tax return when they think that they want to donate to them. It's an eye opening read. You'll find 2012 easily, you'll have to dig for 2013.

I can't wrap my mind around the fact that they bring in $137,616,740 worth of contributions and grants and only give out 17,018,180 worth of contributions to local shelters and organizations. Most of the money goes to salaries and lobbyists.

Just research before you give your money out.

This for sure and the commercials tear my heart out too because they are meant to be that way. I can't stand to watch them.

always donate local.

I always donate in forms of food/leashes/dishes etc. I know these organizations need money but I KNOW my donations will be put to use that way. My local shelter feeds pedigree, they sell the 50 lb bags at a local superstore so I will drop a few off when I get the chance, it makes me feel good.

those spca commercials break my heart and make me hug my furbaby a little tighter.

This.....

Same also holds true for the HSUS. Both HSUS and SPCA are lobbying organizations that pull on people's heart strings. Minimal funds are used to save animals. Also, any rescue truly a part of either euthanize at a higher rate than your local rescues. It's cheaper to euthanize than to care for an animal until it can be placed in a home.

Donate to a local shelter or local rescues. Those commercials kill me too, but remember, the very same thing is sadly going on in your town.

We actually refuse to donate again to our city shelter, we prefer the non profits run by members of our community. We went two years ago to drop off some odds and ends and we didn't even get a THANK YOU. I was utterly appalled....We donate each year cause lets be honest I like animals more then I like humans...

I only donate locally.  I don't trust the large national programs.  I hate the commercials.  I know there are abused animals, but not every skinny, sick or injurred animal was abused.  I hate the ads and they make me angry.  I know of two local no kill shelters in our county, I give food and money.
