My sister got this Circle Y JBN saddle last summer. Her gelding has huge withers and no topline.  We've been working very hard trying to teach him to carry himself properly and I'm hoping once we change his feed program he'll bulk up a little. Anywho, I'm super pleased how this saddle fits him overall, but the little piece beneath the swell seems to sit right on his withers. His pad has a wither cutout but I'm wondering if this is causing him issues?

I had to buy a thicker pad to get clearance.  Once I did that, it was fine.  I use a 1 inch 5 star.

I have some treeless questions also.  :)  How wide does a horse need to be for a wide fit treeless?  Can a average to wide horse get away with a regular fit with a little less pad?

I use a CSI pad..IMO, theyre the best on the market plus, they raise at the wither and will get the saddle off the withers.  Also, I would slide my saddle back slightly.

There is only 1" difference in the reg & wide fits. Yes, but I have found most buy the wide fit.

I have the regular fit.  My gelding has huge shoulders, super high withers (TB age 21) and a short wide back.

My other gelding is more blocky QH build.  I don't really like the JBN on him.  Width seems too narrow.  I think the wide would be good for him, but it would definitely fit too flat on my Shark fin! LOL

Mine is the wide. He's just an odd shaped horse. But this accommodates his big shoulders.

Has anyone used the 5 star pads that are open all the way down the spine? They seem like they would be super comfy and create more of a channel. I don't want to go too wide, as his old 1.5" felt pad made the fit too tight.
