be happy you dont have to pay what an equine dentist charges up here, its on average500- 600 PER horse......

and as to the best way to save money..DONT spend it.....

m

I'm really lucky in my equine dentist, she's fabulous and charges less, but you're right on with what a really talented one charges.

Honestly, you could make that money picking up cans in the ditch. Or babysitting. Or making cakes and selling them. $375 is not that much money on today's market.

How do you pay for shoeing? How do you plan on paying for an emergency surgery? Or a virus involving fluid therapy and 10 days in the hospital? Or an infection? Or a suspensory injury? Or abcesses? Or corrective shoeing? How do you plan on paying for your horses if you need something in your personal life? Do you have insurance on the horse you are making payments on? Why not if not? How do you pay for all of this?

How, if you're paying for good care, and running barrels, attending 3 day shows (how do you attend a 3 day show for only $500? Please teach me), do you not have $375?

Why are you just now figuring this out at 22? At 22 you should be a full blown adult that is capable of figuring out how to raise $375 in a few hours if necessary. Shoot, I could raise that much in a weekend for beer money, a trip to Denver and a rock concert when I was in college on a 20 hour week part time job that paid $5.50 an hour. And that was when I was 18.

Perhaps an intuitive look into the mirror will help you figure out where your future is going. Is it a place where you have to go into debt against $375? Or a place where you can handle your $&!+ and walk hard because you're the one running fancy paid for horses, hauling a fancy paid for rig, and easily meeting your bills?

22. It's time to get stuff figured out.

lexyy12 - 2015-01-29 11:50 AM  Sounds like you need to learn to budget your money or sell a couple horses. If you have to worry about having the money in APRIL for $300 some dollars then you can't afford them. What happens if there is an emergency and you need a few hundred dollars to have your horse cared for and that's not likely that it would be that cheap!
Then they would get what ever necessary. If I had to go borrow money from the bank I would. What ever it took. It isn't that I don't have the money. Right now I have it next week I'll have it too but I want to have the $300 plus still be able to do what ever else. There's a 3 day show I usally go to in April. Cost around $500. I would like to still be able to go to it. If I can't do the show and teeth I won't go to the show. Teeth WILL come first. Always has always will. I have 2 jobs. One I get paid every week one I get paid once a month. The only bills I have is my phone bill and horse payment on my gelding. I just absolutely suck at budgeting. I've always been able to go and do and buy what ever and not worry about it and it's come back to bite me in the butt.

You need to ask yourself 2 questions every single time you want to buy something.
1) Do I NEED it?
or
2) Do I WANT it?
If it's something you want, then forget it. Life and budgeting is all about needs, and wants. Your housing, groceries, ect are needs. Eating out is just something you WANT. A new headstall, is a want. That starbucks coffee is a want. A new outfit, is a want. The movies is a want. You have to learn to pay yourself first. Right off the top of every paycheck you need to put x amount in a savings and dont touch it. Any kind of credit, is your worst enemy. Period. Save up and pay cash. There is no interest on paying cash.

Do your horses NEED a power float for some reason?  Everyone has their preference - power tools cost money and the vets need to pay for them hence the increased cost.  If your horses have no major issues with their teeth then power floating is likely not necessary (zipping up flame suit but this is my two cents).  My vet told me this - if your horse has some issues then you might need to see a vet that specializes in equine dentistry but if not, a regular float when needed will be just fine - at less than half the cost per horse.  Honestly - I'd probably find a vet that can float a horse's teeth the old fashioned way if my horse didn't need anything special done.  My horses don't need sedation this way and don't have their mouths held open for a long period of time and they aren't sore for any length of time after an old fashioned float.  I do believe there is  a place for power tool floats - but only if they need it.  Good luck to you.

I have 2 jobs! There both part time but around here you take what you can get. I already pay for corrective shoeing as well as injections on one every 3 months just to keep her sound. That's $479. She's 2D at best but not sellable and I won't let her be in pain all the time. Yes all 3 of my horses are insured. It's a really cheap show that's why I go. Look up Down South Productions. And because I never had to pay everything before now.

LOL....pretty much everything she spends would be for "wants".... by her own admission, she only has TWO bills (phone and horse payment)....More than likely, she lives at home; doesn't pay rent; doesn't pay for food; doesn't pay for vehicle or trailer........

And FYI for those questioning the quality of my horses care... If I don't have it for what ever reason(which has only been once) dad will give it to me but I don't want for him to. I want to do it on my own.

Do I have a spending problem? Yes I do BUT I'm trying to get everything sorted out what I have to pay every month and then stuff like my mares $150 farrier bill every 5 weeks plus the other horses. Then see what's left and if I need to find soemhingn else to do to fill in gaps some where.

It was the week before Christmas the last time hubby and I went out to dinner and we havent been to the movies since oct. We are happy at home. We have other goals we are working towards so we just dont spend any money frivilously. Heck. if I buy a bag of chips or ice cream at the grocery store I think I really splurged. LOL

I dont think anybody is trying to be hard on you, I know I'm certainly not. Just trying to help you paint the picture and bring you to reality and self control. The word NO is a beautiful word and so liberating!
So you spent $75.00. $45 on a pair of jeans. Did you absolutelly NEED those jeans? What did you spend the other $30 on? It's been over a year since I bought myself a new pair of jeans.

Excel, Quicken and Mint didn't work for me. An app I could have on my phone to document purchases DID. YOUNEEDABUDGET software. Website has classes for free to walk you through all the steps of setting it up. I wish someone had told me this info while I was in college. It would have made it way easier to implement.
First- get you bank balance/cash balance/paypal balance/savings balance as of NOW
2nd- Input it as "Income for February"
3rd- Divy it out exactly and to the penny. You can have a category called Horse Maintenance and put $50 into it now (just as an example) and spread the rest out for your next weeks expenses/groceries/utilities/savings.
4th- you get paid next friday. Do not put that money in the budget until it is in your account and then spend it in between your categories. Add another 50 to your horse maintenance and spread the rest around between your other categories.

So far this is working for me. I have my BIG barrel races already planned for the year and I looked up their costs. All are months away and I'm going to add everything up and divide it out so I can save up enough to do what I want. LOVE THIS APP!
I have a coupon code to save $6 if anyone wants it. You can msg me. BTW- no I didn't make the software. Just like to use it. PLUS it is free for college students! You can look up on the website and email them I believe and they will send you a free activation code.
