Some AMAZING advice HERBIE!!!!! Also I like to put one of my friends or family members on to make a run. Boost my confidence when they come back and say just ride her!

Herbie and KindaClassy are right on. The other thing I do is start to change my mindset and habits in the practice pen. Once I feel a horse has started getting close to the point of entering up 1 or 2 nights a week if the arena has good dirt I will warm them up and send them at the pattern like there is money on the line. It gets both me and my horse out of the habit of loping or trotting a couple of patterns before we make a run. In other words start riding them in practice just like you would at a barrel race or rodeo.

KindaClassey - 2015-01-30 4:14 PMKudos to Herbie's advice. Once you lay the foundation and your horses are really confident in the pattern and what you are asking, ya gotta check your ego and let them work. I find that by adding speed in parts of the pattern, I get my horses to progress toward running quicker and still keep their confidence in what I'm asking. I might float them to and around the first, then really ask to and around the 2nd, then gather up and float to third and home. Next time might be float to 1st and 2nd, then ask to 3rd. Run to 1st, float the others. I do better at keeping my mind
(and theirs
) and finesse on track this way - instead of becoming a crazy woman that is suddenly asking for a lot of speed. I also find this helps the horse accept you handling them in a pattern at a higher rate of speed. Always be horseman enough to know what your horse is ready for. Eventually you have to put on the big girl panties and try to win one!
Excellent advice, kinda classey! I do this same exercise at home except I typically build speed between each barrel, meaning I'll coast to and around the first, then ask for a little more to and around the second, then ask for even more to and around the third, but I may implement what you're doing as well......I like that! Thank you for adding this!

Thanks, but I can't take the credit. Ed Wright's idea. He helped me with a colt that was freakishly talented, but had a problem with handling the pressure. By introducing the speed in parts, this colt learned how to handle the speed - and to keep his mind intact and THINKING in a run. It also allowed my ability to ride the speed to progress with him. His mind and ability was faster than mine!

Ya I'm thinking I might resort to a stiff drink and a magic seat.....oy!
Joking aside, kudos to Herbie and kindaclassy, I think even a part of moving forward with anything is knowing others have the same struggle!
